Non-diabetics: Do you get warned by your doctors?

Any time I go to the doctor for a check-up & they do a family history and tell them one of my parents has adult-onset diabetes, I always get a warning that I may be predisposed to getting it as well. Well, I just asked a diabetic friend of mine to take my blood sugar with the kit she has and the "count" is 86 with not fasting.

I've never been overweight and although I'm not a healthy-food kind of eater, I do eat in moderation (like if I eat a lot for lunch, then dinner will be lighter than normal). How much truth is there to just because a parent having diabetes that I may get it too?

I've had a Class A licence for over 30 years...diabetes (blood sugar) testing is a regular part of the bi-annual physical.

I wouldn't be too worried about having a parent with diabetes compared to 3 grandparents with the it.

Doesn't diabetes skip a generation like baldness?

My mom's side of the family is borderline diabetic, but I've eaten whatever I've wanted for most of my life with no problems. In 3rd grade I consumed too much pepsi and fainted due to the sugar overdose. Even that didn't cause me to get diabetes. I'd like to think I'm safe.

Why would you think baldness skips generations?

i guess with all the "neutral" replies, i'm gonna believe that i'm relatively safe unless i somehow throw all caution to the wind and gain some serious poundage (unlikely to happen). 😉

Just because you are not over weight and are skinny does not mean you are exempt from getting diabetes!!

Your parents had it then nost likely your grandparents had it...there is a real good possibility that no matter hoew well you take care mof yourself as you get older you could have type 2 diabetes!!

Anybody over 35 years of age should get tested regularly for diabetes@!!

well, alrightee then. i've read gosh knows how many stories that type 2 diabetes can be controlled and even disappear if you exercise and lost weight...so i naturally assumed since i do exercise and am within the appropriate weight, that the likelihood of me even getting it were slim. everybody i know who has type 2 is overweight and do not exercise.
guess i really need to change my thinking on this.

Partly X-linked?

You have a 2-4 increased risk or more since your parents have type 2, but since you exercise and are slim you should be good. If you ever become obese your risk skyrockets though. It doesn't hurt to check everytime you get your physical. It's usually the obese people that have poor control for years and years that get the serious problems.

whew, feel somewhat better now. although, i will heed your advice in getting my blood sugar checked regularly.

its true, same goes with cancer, and other such diseases! I am a science student!
get regular yearly checkups, you will be fine as the doc will inform u if something goes wrong b4 it gets out of hand!

little exercise and lots and lots of water to drink everyday!

Just because it can sometimes disappear w/exercise and weight loss does not mean that only sedentary, overweight people get diabetes type 2. Quite a lot of diabetics are slim and active.

Get tested, it's easy. In my area, they have lots of diabetes-awareness things that include a free screening - look out for something like that.

IF you know you're diabetic, it's easy to control.

My mother died of complications of diabetes, it's not pretty. What's the big deal about getting tested and, if necessary, doing what it takes to take care of yourself?

Best to you.

You are at increased risk of developing diabetes, just as you doctor has told you. But your risk is still rather low being that you are exercising regularly, thin and not overweight. While some people are in shape and have diabetes, this is rare. All my patients with diabetes are overweight.

If you had a non-fasting glucose of 86, you are doing just fine right now. At your yearly physical, they will check your glucose to keep an eye on it, but i would not be overly concerned.

Your doctor is just doing his job, making sure that you dont let things go and get fat because if you did, you would be at higher risk than other fat people for getting the disease.
