I'd like to set up some home automation, but I want to manage everything within the confines of my own home to avoid subscription costs, privacy issues, and connectivity problems.

Set a computer at Home to be controlled from the Outside vai the Internet.

Then use program like VNC - http://www.uvnc.com/downloads.html (encrypted and totally private).

This page has some general pointer on how to use VNC - http://www.ezlan.net/vnc.html

Or TeamViewer - https://www.teamviewer.com/en-us/download/windows {encrypted but going through 3rd party server).

Under such arrangement you will be able whatever is controllable from your LAN and the Internet.

As for the control devices.

This is a simple example of what a search in Amazon using the term computer control your house yields.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=computer+control+your+house

There is ample of solution that can be used without 3rd party one line management.
