non bootable scsi cdrom?

I have a Adaptec 2940UW scsi card with a hp rebadged plextor 40x cd rom and a plextor 12x cd burner. I tried messing with all the options in the scsi select to have it boot off the scsi cd rom. I changed my settings in the bios for cd rom first and then i tried for scsi first. All of these options didn't work. For some reason i can't boot off of either scsi optical drive. Any suggestions?
System specs:
AMD 1800+
Soyo Dragon Plus
Crucial 256 PC2100
TNT2 Pro
ADaptec 2940UW scsi card
Plextor 40x, Plextor 12x burner all on same cable and same channel
