Nomad II memory "un" formatable?

So, can it be done? I know it supposedly works w/ the rio, but my friend had problems.

If so, what do I use to unformat them? I ask because I will be getting a 64MB smartmedia card.. and if i get rid of the nomad, i plan on using that 64 MB for the digital camera i'd get in place of the nomad.
 
I bought a new Sandisk 64MB Smartmedia and stuck it in the Nomad II, no formatting was done and it worked right away. When I bought my 32MB Smartmedia for the RIO 300, it had to format it first.
