Worst idea ever. Well leave it to Nokia to do something like this.

This thing would be killed off faster than the N9 and this one actually deserves to die.

no access to google play?

I'll wait until somebody hacks it.
I'm sure it will be hacked to run Google Play Services, and that will be great for the advanced users. For the other 99% of consumers, this is a pathetic phone that is going to promote Windows Phone - and I like that strategy. Dirty move Microsoft, dirty move.

Just seems weird to build an Android phone that looks like Windows Phone to access Microsoft and Nokia services and probably have a more limited app selection than a regular Windows Phone due to having to use Nokia's custom app store.

Sure modders could probably unlock and root this and get Google Play on it. Or at least sideload apps. But anyone interested enough in phones that could do this probably isn't going to buy a super load end Android phone marketed for third world countries to do it.

And the price of this doesn't look any cheaper than the Lumia 520, which is apparently already doing very well in emerging markets.

That's the part I don't get. This thing seems worse in every way (storage, app selection, responsiveness) than the 520, which I would understand if it were measurably cheaper, but it's not.

Microsoft just announced some changes to their chassis requirements as well, on-screen buttons are approved, camera button not required D:, and Snapdragon 200, 400, and 400 LTE chipsets are approved. Plus a reference design program through Qualcomm.

Interesting to see if they still do this (or just decide to put WP on these handsets instead! :D).

No one should buy the Nokia X. Its Android, but no Play Store. Unless you sideload apps, you're limited to whatever Nokia deems fit to give you. Heck, with such a heavy skinned version of Android, side loading might be a crapshoot itself.

The CPU is identical to the Lumia 520/521, but this costs nearly double the Lumia 5x0s which come on sale routinely for 60-70 dollars. And at least they have access to the WP Store, such as it is.

Quoting a line found on this link:
http://conversations.nokia.com/2014/02/24/nokia-x-family/

As many more as you can fit can be obtained from the Nokia Store, third-party app stores and sideloaded.

And the video on the same above link... the guy says that apps compatible with android can also be download and used from 3rd party app stores.

Going by this, I'm under the impression that Google Play would also be a 3rd party app store... is it not?

Personally I don't think anyone here cares for these phones, and that's by design. These are low end phones for the 3rd world market.

Agreed, the Nokia management team has to be completely mentally defective to have pushed this.

What a complete waste of resources.

Terrible idea that I think Elop pushed for and Nadella was forced to agree to. Nokia needs to produce more WP low cost devices, not useless forked ones.

If they have a single kick ass flagship device then it might be worth it.
But they damn sure cant compete with a load of mid range phones in this market.

OR.....

Low-end (free) phones that are remarkably better than the other low-end free phones from the big companies right now.

I guess the question is why this is better than the 520 for replacing Asha? That's what this is right? Replacing their pseudo smartphone dumbphone lineup.

And ironically I thought Windows Phone was better at scaling down to low end hardware than Android.

They do its called the 1520, I'm typing from it. It's arguably one of the best phones on the market. They need more variety of phones like Samsung has for Android. With MS taking over, Nokia X seems completely pointless and counterproductive.

As for the price comparison, Nokia was losing money on those Lumia phones despite a billion dollar subsidy from Microsoft.
