Nokia N1

Nokia announced a new tablet today. When I heard Nokia was going to be announcing a new product, I was puzzled why it was "Nokia" and not Microsoft. (Sorry, I've been corrected, different Nokia.) But now I understand, it's another Android product.

Nokia announced the N1 tablet. A 7.9 inch 2048x1536 (4:3) Android tablet. And yes, it's going to get a lot of comments about it's similarities to the iPad Mini. Usually I scoff when someone does this, but in this case, they aren't wrong. It is very similar looking with a aluminum body, rounded edges, same button, camera, and speaker placement, and such.

The other specs include an Atom Z3580 processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB storage, USB C connector (reversible), 6.8mm thick, 318 grams, Android 5.0. Comes in natural aluminum or lava grey colors (a fairly dark grey).

This actually looks like a pretty cool Android tablet. Sadly there appears to be no North America launch details yet. It's launching first in China next February for $250, then Russia and select European countries after.

Though I do wonder what is wrong with Microsoft. Why not put Windows 8.1 on this and name it the Surface Mini and sell it for $300? (Haha, sorry again, wrong Nokia.)

This seems like a great tablet actually but no NA release makes me sad.

Why are you even mentioning Microsoft in this post, Microsoft only brings sadness to Nokia folks:colbert:. This is the Nokia Nokia, the Finns from Finland.

Designed by Nokia. Owned by Microsoft. Built by Foxconn. The Nokia of old has gotten a bit diluted. Sorry folks. 🙂

Microsoft owns Nokia and is phasing out the Nokia name on some of Nokia's products.

Microsoft owns Nokia's previous mobile division. Nokia still exists as a separate entity, though they've mostly stuck to their software/map making until now.

Nokia isn't allowed to compete against Microsoft in the smartphone market until 2016 due to a non-compete clause as a term of their deal, and Microsoft themselves are phasing out the name "Nokia" on their smartphones by removing the name from the new Lumias.

Microsoft did NOT buy Nokia in its entirety.

Designed by Apple, built by Foxconn.
Designed by HTC, built by Fox.... Well you get the idea. 🙂

They don't own this Nokia (still called Nokia) they own the other Nokia (which isn't called Nokia anymore IIRC).

Its totally not confusing for the general public at all. 😉

Wow. Consider me educated. I did not realize it was only the mobile phone business. I thought they got all of Nokia. 🙂 That's interesting. Now I understand the confused replies.

You are a bit confused, they bought only the mobile devision, the maps, networks and research divisions are still with the #realNokia and this is their first product. It is likely (if this is at least a bit successful) that we will also see smartphones in the 2016, designed by the the old (symbian, meego, S60,S40,... before Elop hurricane) Nokia.

Got distracted by this video, that's why I didn't see the comments in-between:

Anyway. So ignore the comment about me wishing it had Windows on it, that's totally irrelevant now I realize.

I do think this is a nice looking Android tablet. Nokia (Finnish Nokia apparently) has it's own customizations to this called Z Launcher that apparently float frequently used apps to the top of the home screen. And let you draw on the screen to launch other apps. I'd probably install Google Launcher or Nova on it though.

I do hope this makes an appearance in North America. But geez, why announce a product now that won't launch for 4 months (in China)?

It seems like Nokia will also be licensing out its name to third-party manufacturers. I don't think it will be long before "Nokia" doesn't really mean much, unfortunately.

I think they will do as they done with Foxconn and similarly as Nvidia does with it's tablets. They will make the reference design, license it with the necessary patents and the brand to the OEM and let them bring it to market.

A Z3580 is pretty quick. Perhaps not the best in the tablet market but top half easily (I think it's S801 class). Graphics performance would be weaker though.

Looks interesting. I have a soft spot for Nokia products.

Isn't x86 android incompatible with lots of software? Wonder why they went with x86. I wonder if windows could be installed on it.

Looks great but of course the devil is always in the details. Battery life and screen quality are the keys. If Nokia get those right this tablet will be a bargain and put enormous pressure on other Android OEMs.

It would be worth a NA release with those aesthetics just to see the amount of angst generated by Johnny Ive.

Ha, Apple would sue Nokia so quickly... and it'd be guaranteed to win, too. Nokia (or whoever really designed this) was pretty blatant in copying the iPad mini.
