I love the look of this phone. I had a Focus for a while and it treated me pretty good. I just upgraded to a Focus S (got a deal on a forum, off contract), it has noticeable difference in speed and the bigger screen helps out me with the onscreen keyboard. Considering I just purchased the Focus S and LTE isn't available yet, i'm willing to keep on to my Focus S until my official upgrade is up (Dec 2012) and hopefully by then LTE and a new swarm of WP7 phones are available.

Apollo should be out well before then. More than likely, you'll be looking at dual-core phones at that point.

Meh - the Lumia is not "incredibly poor" in the pixel density department. The Titan is pushing its, yes, but while it could be better, 800x480 @ 4.3" is not that bad. If you are really concerned about Pentile and subpixel density, the Focus S has pretty much the exact same screen as the GS2.

Anyway, for Mango, the resolution (much like the processor) is set in stone, no one should have expected anything different. Perhaps we will see more resolution options with Apollo. Until then, we are all aware of what the resolution will be.

4.3" 800x480 Pentile is incredibly poor, people bashed the Galaxy S for having a pentile screen yet it had much better pixel density than the 900. In fact if a new Android phone was announced with this display there would probably be a dozen posts already calling it DOA for having such poor pixel density. I guess the standards for WP7 are just a lot lower, stuff that would be considered crap in an Android phone is considered high end when it is in a Nokia WP7 device.

Honestly I don't think Wp7 fans are doing the OS any favors by being so accepting of mediocre devices. Apple didn't become a major player in the smartphone market by releasing a phone that was pretty good compared to Windows Mobile and Blackberry OS, the original iPhone had vastly superior hardware compared to it's competitors and their success reflected that. Microsoft needs to use it's control over WP7 hardware to ensure all devices are cutting edge, if they had mandated that the latest Mango phones have 720p screens and NovaThor or Exynos SoCs I think they would be far more successful.

Putting an Exynos SoC on a phone running Mango (if Mango even supported it) would be completely pointless. The software just isn't demanding as of now.

It is something like being that guy that builds a PC with a Core i7-3960X, 16 GB of RAM, and quad-Radeon HD 7970s...then puts Windows XP on it. It may be nice to have that kind of power, but it doesn't accomplish anything. The difference, of course, is that Windows XP is a ten year old OS that is horrendously outdated. WP7 is completely modern, but manages to perform very well on the hardware it supports.

There's apparently a Samsung Windows Phone being released with LTE. I'd expect it to use SAMOLED+ and have a 4.3" screen.

Also, let's be realistic: the average consumer doesn't have a clue what pixel density is. iPhones sell because they are a fashion accessory. Android phones sell because of specs.

I still disagree that Pentile is the devil (I find nothing wrong with the screen on my Vibrant or my Focus), but, I have good news - Nokia has confirmed that the Lumia 900 is not Pentile, putting its screen much more on par with the Focus S or the SGS2.

Also, I disagree about the hardware of the iPhone. In my opinion, the iPhone 4 was the first iPhone that truly had advanced hardware compared to the competition. The original iPhone had a revolutionary screen, but the internals were nothing special, or even sub par in some ways. The 3G was better, but still not terribly impressive. By the 3GS, they were competing better in terms of SoC, but by then their screen had fallen way behind the competition.

It was the software and it's interface that made the iPhone change the market. However, that's a moot point in this discussion, so there's no point in arguing it further.

Lack of a pentile screen is definitely nice. I think I'd prefer this over the Focus S now. The Titan/Titan II look like they're going to remain the closest thing to "powerhouse" phones that we'll see from Mango.

Yes, because a 7% faster CPU makes a huge difference.

I think I may pick up this phone for my upgrade coming up in May now that I know it has a non-pentile screen. My ip4 has been serving me well but I'd like something with a bigger screen since I have huge hands. The size of this phone plus the OLED screen and the fact that it comes with a full featured GPS makes it practically perfect for me. The only thing I'm disappointed about is that MS changed the zunepass, it used to be such an awesome unique service but now it's just the same as a lot of other music services.

I've been tempted to upgrade to a 4S but after using one that my friend has it doesn't feel all too much faster than my ip4 so I don't think it's worth it really.

The March 18th date has been tossed around the sites before, but wow, $99 is a great deal. I wonder what the off contract price will be...

Good contract price for the lumina 900. Really 99.99 should be the most expensive WP7 on contract till apollo. Hopefully the lumina 900 sets that trend. I hope the off contract price is under 500 dollars.

Yeah that is pretty nice, I don't mind WP7 using lesser hardware because the software runs fine on it, but they shouldn't be charging the same as phones that have much better SoC's.

Rgh....I have a dillema.

I put down $25 to pre-order the Lumia 900 at the Microsoft store on Friday...only to find out yesterday that I won a free Lumia 800 in a dev constest (thanks, Chore Tracker).

Soo...while I could eBay the 800 and use that to pay for the 900, is it worth it? Plus, will I be patient enough? Decisions, decisions.

900 is a bigger number than 800, so the uninformed consumer in me says sell it. 😉

DO WANT! Hopefully it'll go the Android route where a used one locally on CL will be around $200'ish just a few months after it's been released.

*EDIT* n/m I just re-read the specs, I cannot stand AMOLED screens, shit 🙁 Well back to HTC for me I guess.

I'd definitely wait and use the 900, if it was me though I would probably play around with the 800 until it comes out but then the resale value drops off somewhat.

EDIT: Btw is that 25$ pre-order with a new contract or what?

LTE is the real kicker for me...I'm a bit conflicted on which screen I like better, and I really don't care about the FFC. Is it worth the extra time and hassle for LTE? Decisions decisions.....

I'll probably end up playing around with it first, current eBay prices aren't terribly different for new vs slightly used 800s.

I find this interesting. Would you mind explaining?

Couple of factors...

The Lumia 900 drops the PenTile, but due to its size, it has a lower DPI (217 vs 254). I have a suspicion that the 800's screen might still look sharper, even with PenTile. Would have to see them side by side. I guess I could do that now by looking at a Focus Flash vs a Focus S, similar comparison....

Also, its a question of size. When I played with them at the store, I actually liked the 3.7" Focus Flash a little better than the 4.3" Focus S. I have fairly small hands, so 4.3" is really pushing it - I had the HD2 and wasn't a huge fan of the size. I think 4" is about the sweet spot, and the 800 is a little smaller, whereas the 900 is a little bigger.

It's probably the cheap bastard in me, but I'd say drop the preorder for the 900 and keep the 800. Use the money you would have spent on the 900 on the new hardware refresh later this year.

Yea that's kinda the thing....the 900 is certainly better than the 800, but is it $200 better? Especially considering I get a new phone every six months or so, which means I'll have something that dwarves both of them by the end of the year.

Just personally, for my own self, I would not spend to get an LTE phone right now. Next gen LTE SoCs are around the corner, better battery life, higher performance...

Until then I thought the 800 supported HSPA, which should be enough speed.
