Did a quick online check of the Fry's 521 and it shows a Tmobile prepaid, which is fine with me, dunno if that means its unlocked or not for other carriers.

Yes, T-mobile locked.
There are no cheap unlock codes from the usual sources online.
You need to have it on T-mobile for probably 2 or 3 months before they will give you an unlock code.
It will work as is, no unlock, with MVNOs like Straight talk if you buy the straight talk SIM for T-mobile for example.

Of course it doesn't matter now since it's out of stock.

Not out of stock at Fry's. Just bought a second one. 30 minutes ago.

Tmobile prepaid is what I use now, and cheapest voice/text I know of for low volume users. They have a cheap data plan too via I think walmart.

Eh, I have an even cheaper plan from H2O mobile (MVNO on ATT).

$10 for 200 minutes that last 90 days.

beat that :)

You bought what?
The 521 is showing up at $149.99 at Frys: http://www.frys.com/product/7721338
The 520 is $79.99 at Frys: http://www.frys.com/product/7803009
The 520 is not in stock at the Downers Grove, IL store which is near me. Take a look if you don't believe me. The 521 is in stock but I'm not paying $149.

The earlier posts should have mentioned Fry's has the 520 for $79.99 not the 521.

Your above post has the correct links and prices, Fry's does not have the 521 on sale, it's the 520 for $79.99.

First year with Tmobile prepaid I bought $100 refill for $87 which gives me 1100 minutes that last 365 days, and "any" added amount bumps the total for another 365 days. Now $100 only gives I think 1000 minutes, but I use around 300 to 400 min a year. Seems almost the same cost, but I only need to refill once a year.

I can roll my balance of $150 or so over to next phone, and usage should drop as I will be using it wifi as much as possible.

$10 refills suck at tmobile, only like 30 min, but one of them would roll my min for another 365 days. I don't do it because around $90 I can find a $100 refill.

It was a one day sale with a promo code, something like that, but it was the 521.

The 520 can be the better one, as the 521 is a custom T-Mo variant. Better as far as easy to find more covers, battery cases, etc.

It may be an in-store only code. I got a similar code in my inbox, but mine is in-store only.

Funny thing is, the "in-store only" one-use promo code is not even honored by the cashier in-store even if you show them the email printout. These things are worthless.

Apologies for the basic question: Can I use this phone as a straight up replacement for my prehistoric flip-phone, running on a T-mobile contract?

The phone I got developed a vertical blue line down the right side of the screen which would not go away. Looks like others have reported this issue with other Nokia Lumia models. Luckily HSN is sending me a new phone to exchange.

I just picked up the AT&T GOPhone version of this on Amazon.

My question is can this phone be used completely untethered from a data plan (e.g. wireless only)?
