Nokia lumia 521 for T-Mobile. $80 with coupon 135235 for single use per account.

If you have a bofa credit card you can also check if you have the $10 off $20 cash back deal . i had that as well some people don't.

I bought it just to play around with. Can't lose at these prices imho

If you want one that works with AT&T, I'd wait until you see a deal on the Lumia 520 AT&T Go Phone, since it is pretty much the same phone (aside from the 521 being a tad bit taller) and it is already set up for AT&T. The best speed you'll get it 21 Mpbs HSPA+ in either case, though. The 520 on AT&T also has the advantage of being the same size as the global version, so there are color covers easily found online for cheap:

Will it work if it is never activated?

You know as a wifi web browser and apps that I can download from the Windows store.

Not sure but at worst you could borrow a Sim and remove it if it required it. I'd figure it won't need it. At this price its not even bad to use as a zune replacement

Just bought one using my wife's credit card (suppose I should tell her) $99 - $20 coupon - $10 BOFA = $69 with free shipping.

We planned on buying a low end GPS, this has offline GPS and might be used as a spare cell phone. I might actually give it to my wife to upgrade from her ancient Nokia flip phone, OMG it doesn't even have a web browser!

is it worth upgrading from a lumia 710?

i'd love a 921, but that's just too much $$

how would this work overseas? Would I have to get an unlock to work overseas?

The worst thing about this phone is it makes you question the pricing on the better handsets. How on earth can they make this little guy for $80 while "high end" phones cost over $500

because nokia / microsoft is probably losinga massive amount of money on the 520/521.

im guessing its to get a user base. i mean nokia was bleeding money , and microsoft will probably throw tons of money at just getting people in the ecosystem.

Hmm, I read on there that it needs to have been active for 18 months before requesting an unlock code.

weird , i heard all you had to do was havce the phone active. a few people mentioned you'd have to use the handset for 7 days

so i spent $670 on cellphones this week.

a $70 lumia 521, and a $600 moto x. yes i love my moto x, but the lumia 521 honestly is not bad. i could see it being really great if you weren't a heavy google user and say had never had a phone. glad i bought it honestly.

i mean in a way the workflows of how to get to things, kind of makes me think its like a windows iphone. just a lot of back buttons and sub menus and home button pressing. it is also quite a responsive phone with a dual 1.0 snapdragon S4. i'd say it is smoother than my last phone (a razr m, with a dual 1.5 S4). the moto x is a little smoother i'd say at rendering pages.

im guessing nokia is losing like $50 on every one of these they sell, but great for us, its a pretty decent phone.

also by the way HSN throws in a car charger and 1 screen protector.

Finding it hard not to resist upgrading from my pre-paid feature phone to this... if Microsoft/Nokia wants to give away the store with the Lumia 521, who am I to argue? The T-Mobile $30 100min Talk/Unlimited Data plan is great as well...it's still about 3x more than what I currently pay, but I gotta stop being cheap someday and finally get a Smartphone...

Dang, this is a nice deal. Does it have to be activated in order to just use it as a media and game player? Throw a 64gb microSD in there and you've got a hell of a portable media center.

MS clearly isn't against throwing money around in order to grab marketshare. Remember the good ol' eBay 30% Bing Cashback days?

you dont have to activate it to use it as a media player or download stuff from the app store. though as i've discovered windows phone 8 sucks for media at this point.

it comes with both nokia music and xbox live music. nokia music CANT FAST FORWARD or REWIND at all which is mind boggling. and xbox music , can only fast forward by holding down the "next track" button (so a lot like most a car stereos). there is no way to scrub tracks i.e. just seek to a given location. i.e. no seek bar. WTF? winamp had a seek bar nearly 20 years ago.

and if you think you can replace it with a 3rd party the app selection is pretty much horrible in the windows store in regards to alternatives. so yeah xbox live music sucks. and nokia music sucks even more. and the app store has apps in it, but they all appear to be god awful other than the few first tier apps in there (spotify and twitter for example are more or less like their android versions).

that said, it will play your video / music files without a line on the phone. just the player isn't exactly great.

best part of this phone by the way is nokia HERE maps / drive. you have to have a SIM card in it for it to work to validate your region (but you can put an unactivated one in, it comes with a t-mobile micro sim). but this feature alone probably is worth almost the entire price of the phone.

the GPS software allows offline downloads either state by state (california was 255mb) or entire country (2.5GB), so you dont need any data or wifi to use it. its got great point of interest, even has speed limit data, and can figure out what speed you are driving. it even starts beeping if you are speeding haha. pretty much destroys google maps and its very fast. probably a better GPS device than most sub $200 standalone gps products on the market. ive driven bmws and audis with $2000 nav systems that would get crapped on by this phone.

So yeah, its honestly a decent device just for use as a GPS , a mediocre at best media player, a pretty much terrible 5MP camera with no flash, and it can surf the internet and be a backup phone. for $70-80 great deal

thank you hans007 for your mini review.

I have and always will hate media players which don't let you scrub tracks/movies.

It is just as bad as podcast players which don't save your location when you restart them.

I am definitely unsold and glad I got an iPhone when I was up for an upgrade.

Interesting, thanks. I do already have a good supply of iPhones and standalone GPS units, so I'll skip this, but this still seems like a good deal for several use cases, as you said.
