Hahha...dang Cingular!

I know a company that still gives away 8290s for FREE!! I just got one a few days ago (after the comission drops too!). I think they want to beat the market or something. In any case, their phone number is 949-433-8480 and they are based in Irvine. Good hunting for FREE PHONES!!! I just LOVE the word FREE, don't you?

I just got me a new 8290 last week, for free. Signed up for the $39/month 300 anytime minute, unlimited weekends & nights, no LD surcharge plan. Serviced by the Cingular net. My buddy just got his yesterday, same deal.

Don't have the phone# anymore but the guy sells in the Hollywood, burbank, Pasadensa area. But I think he'll do business anywhere in Nev and Cal. Email is FreeCellPhone@cosmo.com. Tell 'em Punkie sent you, you might get a free business card.

cedman, not allowed? That doesn't sound right. If you want to give them away for free, that should be your own business.

I was looking for the free 8290 when they all started charging $90 for 'em. I asked why the sudden increase and they told me that Cingular sharply cut their commission rate so they could not afford to freebie them anymore. Not so much that they were told they couldn't, just that the financial situation wouldn't allow them to hand them out for free.

The freecellphone@cosmo.com guy apparently has a different commission setup because he can still do the deal, had no problem setting my friend up, and wanted to know if I knew anybody else interested.

Thanks Punkie for the email address. I dropped him a note and he got right back. I'm set up to get a 8290 on tuesday, only a total of $21 tax, and I don't have to drag my sorry butt out to Monterey Park to do the deal, he's right in my 'hood.

He was saying that he's heard talk of them dropping his commission rate so he may have to start charging for the 8290 also soon.

BTW the phone uses the PacBell/Cingular network but I'll be billed by MCI/Worldcom. I've heard bad tales of their billing system, but I am not afraid, I've dealt with worse (Staples, Amazon) and survived. For a $99 savings and a cool phone I'll take my chances.

Ew another MCIWireless deal, this in my opinion is not a HOT deal MCI has always used discounts on equipment to lure customers to sign up with them. Have any of you tried to call into their customer support center? All I can say is good luck, especially if they over bill you. I say if you want Pacbell/Cingular SVC to thru them or an authorized dealer for them. MCI also resells ATT, and Verizon. I am a form MCI customer and Sr. Sales rep. I got Cingular thru Cingular and have to give them kudos for the rates and plan that they are offering, but in my opinion if you sign up through MCI you asking for a year of hell.

Cingular "claims" that they have a way of deactivating your handset by way of it's unique ID number. I don't know if this is true or not, but I don't think so - even so, can't you unlock it and switch to a different carrier? I don't think that ALL of the GSM carriers in the world carry a database of ID numbers of reported lost/stolen phones.

From "my friend's" experience, you can still use "lost" handsets.

One more thing to add, if you report your phone as lost instead of stolen, it is much less of a hassle as you do not require a police report.

Before you claim your insurance, switch off the phone, take out the sim first,
that way they can't disable your phone thru network.

anyway, they can detech that lost phone re-appear on the network later, but they may not want to spend people and time to catch you.

haha nice BCC plug.
anyways, i ended up activating an old 5190 with prepaid pacbell. i know it may suck to you, but so far i only use it rarely. 50$ setup with 10$ worth of minutes for 30days, also a registration card that will give you another 15$. activation is usually 30bucks. after that you can pick up other denominations that last 6months. so for me it was 70$ for 6months and 30$ (45$) worth of talktime.
.50/min weekdays (ya sucks) .25/min weekend etc etc. all the features, paging, voicemail etc.
what sucks the most is you gotta use your phone to access voicemail, and thats .25/min. um, also the 100$ card gives you a .35/min rate (acutally they just give you an extra 67minutes, which equates to .35/min)
so for rare uses/emergencies/pager replacement, its a good value. otherwise when i see my usage ever exceed that of a contract, of course ill change over.

ok, just my .02 hope it helps. LA is the place to be. get it at BCC. =P
oh one more thing, if you wanna get hooked up at BCC, drop me a pm- we're just one big family anyways right!

This is probably the fourth time I've tried to get this question answered. But what are the process of getting the 8290 with an existing plan. I have a 6190 and another 3-5 months on my one year contract but I really want the 8290. What are my options?

Hey Sygyzy,

Try this. Transfer your existing account to someone else. Just call Pac Bell and tell them that you want to transfer your existing account to another person. In other words, that person will become fully responsible for that contract. Once they do that, you're off the hook. Go ahead and sign up for a new phone. The person you transfered the phone to, will have to sign up for a year contract though.

I did that about 3 years ago when I was using that crappy StarTac 7000 from PacBell. I transfered the account to my girlfriend and signed up for the 6190.

Hope it helps.

Hey Sygyzy,
Here is what I did: My dad had this old Mitsubishi G150 phone with a pacbell plan about two years ago. He didn't really want it anymore, so CINGULAR has this TRADE-IN program and it goes as follows:

You keep the same plan/SIM chip and what you do is CINGULAR gives you $150 credit towards a new phone under this TRADE-IN program. The key is that $150 credit applies to the RETAIL value of the phone, not the current promotion (eg. Nokia 8290 for $99). So I traded in my phone and got the NOKIA 8290 and was still under the same contract my dad had originally (same phone number, same SIM chip). And you don't have to pay for the $36 activation fee because you are not opening a new line.
Here is what was really cool from AFFORDABLE PORTABLES in Puente Hills, CA. The retail value of the NOKIA 8290 is $299. Meaning that I had to pay $150 after the $150 credit. The guy was really cool and told me he'll give it to me like I'm a new customer which meant $99. My total came out to be about $120 including tax and I got all the accesssories: leather case, car adapter, hands-free earpiece, and the AC charger.
It was a good way to get rid of my dad's old clunky phone that was sort of broken and at the same time, we didn't have to deal with any number changes + you don't have to start a new contract unless you change plans. I upgraded my plan so I started a new contract.

Here is the info for AFFORDABLE PORTABLES if you need it:
17850 East Colima Rd.
Rowland Heights, CA
626-964-9335

If you have any questions, just e-mail me. Thanks! Hope this information helps!

Actually, every wireless service provider has trade-in option/ discount towards new phone for contract-end user, they want to keep customers.
