i know someone has already posted a free phone deal for souther califorians but, it a little far for some of us. so all you in orange county (near disneyland) can go down to little saigon (bolsa, as refered to by us vietnamese people.) you can go down to a little pager/cell phone shop next to asain garden mall called bcc and they will give you the phone with accessories for free witha 1 year contract.

You can get an area code from anywhere. Anyways, wonder mike, you may want to check out the other thread started by TurtleMan.

BCC is ok - it stands for Beeper Cellular Corporation. Anyhow check out what they did to my friend. He signed up for a year contract whatever service with them right, and my friend's T28 World that the salesman tried to pass off as new was kind of scratched up, the manual had soy sauce stains on it, and the headset that he gave him was broken. They have ok prices, TONS of accessories, but word of advice if you guys buy anything from them, be sure to check over whatever you get before you leave the place.

Their contact info is:

BCC
9252 Bolsa Ave., Suite A
Westminster, CA 92683
Tel: 714-373-3100
Fax: 714-373-3130

They carry AT&T, Pac Bell, Airtouch, Sprint, and MCI.

Regarding area codes, you can get any Pacific Bell wireless area code, period. I don't know if you can just sign up for one immediately, but the way you had to do it before was to sign up for your phone with a local area code wherever you are doing the contract, and then you can call 611 and have them change your profile to whatever area code that you want. This was back in the day when there were tons of different plans for different areas of CA, like you couldn't sign up with an SF plan (which would normally be much much better than LA and SD plans) with an LA #, you would have to change it with 611 after you finish activation.

Cingular is trying to consolidate all of their plans into one badass plan, and IMHO, I think they are doing a very good job with the 'Cingular Home' and 'Cingular Nation' plans.

Hey DongTran.. you have contacts around here in Orange County? hehe. Good looking out though.. I get my haircuts somewhere around Asian Garden Mall, but I was planning on just going to one of the shops around San Gabriel/Monterey Park/Rowland Heights for a cell. This may be a moot point, but are any one of these shops better than the others.. or do they just vary based on who is running the shop for the most part?

in my experience with those asian places
it doesn't really matter
as long as you get your free phone and contract and whatnot, you're fine cuz you'll probably never see the person again
if somebody ever goes wrong with your fone, you take it back to an official PCS store.

Let's see... you could start with asking "please", or maybe saying "thank you for the info but..".

Or maybe you can get off your fat **S and call the number that DongTran took the time to post.

Hey Laxer - no, my plan is in SF/Bay Area, but my friend got his in OC @ BCC. The whole process took him like over an hour too, a while compared to 20-30 min for both my and my girlfriends phones. I only go up to OC once in a while when I want a good bowl of Pho, some fresh tapioca banana pudding or some fresh soy bean juice - good stuff.

I bought my 8290 from one of those asian places in LA and there is a contract that you sign. They take down your credit card number also. I asked for a northern california area code and they told me I couldn't do that. I asked what if I changed the area code after they activated the phone when I got home and they told me that any changes to my phone contract such decreasing the rate plan and changing area codes within 6 Months would incur a charge of $200 to my credit card. I know you change area codes through pac bell because they don't care but that contract I signed with the store kinda screws me over. They have my credit card number..hehe..but I just recently cancelled that card. I wonder if I should give it a shot.

DongTran- good bowl of Pho, huh? Actually, the majority of my co-workers are Vietnamese so they take me to a ton of places around the Little Saigon area sometimes (I'm not Vietnamese btw heh).

Djchowfun- I recall in another recent thread floating around about Nokias in the SD area, someone mentioned that if you have a problem with your phone/plan you actually go back to the store where you bought the phone and signed the contract at. Just wanted to make sure what you said was correct about taking it back to the PacBell store instead. Thanks.

DCCSpeed: actually, I don't understand what you mean but it being too much trouble for the $39.99 plan. I actually make use of my phone, as well as everybody else I know, and the $29.99 plan and below is simply lacking in incentives to even think about. You only get 150 peak minutes, so you have to wait until the evening to even think about calling, or if you prefer, all you have to do is talk 22.2 minutes over 150 peak minutes @ the rate of 45 cents per minute to even out to $40 - OR, you can pay $40, and get 150 more peak minutes, plus free long distance to call people outside your neighborhood without charge.

Hey Laxer, I only go to OC like a few times a year - think of it as a pilgrimage. OC has the largest Vietnamese community in the world outside of Vietnam, second to San Jose.

Regarding phone troubles, I don't even want to deal with what happens if my phone is stolen or whatnot, so I pay $3 for phone insurance. That's $36 a year - much better than buying a T28 World for the full price ($400 @ pacbell stores, around $250 or so on ebeigh).

the store you go back to won't do ishy
read the warranty like (not sounding like a dick)
it'll tell you to take it back to an official pcs store (not in those exact words lol)
they'll run some tests, and if they find out that there is some type of manufactur's defect or something along those lines they'll replace your fone. if it's something that you did, they'll do the best of their ability to fix it but make no guarantees.

ugh. and yes @BCC cellular, they have insane wait times.

A head up on the 8290 Pacbell phone (Cingular Wireless now)
In Irvine area, at the 99 Market, you can get it for free.
They call it the "store-discount"

Yep, I saw at 99 Ranch for the 8290 for free. It was in the case. I am vietnamese too, Bolsa is the best place to get food and buy cheap stuff. If these stores can afford to give phones for free, think of how much money Circuit City, and Best Buy make when they sell their phones? That's why we gotta get the best deal around and price match!

I suggest all of you jump on any Pac Bell/Cingular cell phone deals in southern califonia if you can still find them....

I have a friend who works at an authorized Cingular Wireless dealer, and they said that they are no longer going to allow these stores to set their own prices.

He said last week he was selling the 8290s for free with a year's contract, even no tax....

now he has to charge $99 and charge tax too...

Cingular found out that these cell stores in Southern Califonia have been selling cell phones at a lower price, even for free, because these guys make most of their money from commission anyways..... they are gonna require all authorized dealers to sell cell phones at a set price.... so no more deals.... get them while you can....

ahsia- think you're right man. I heard recently from someone who bought a new Nokia from one of those Asian stores.. the 8290 she bought wasn't free anymore.. not full price, but not free either.

-Does anyone know if Cingular has made any changes to their wireless plans?

-Are you guys referring to the Ranch 99 in Irvine.. I think I saw a big sign on the right-hand side when I walk in about cell phones...

yeah, my friend showed me the e-mail that was sent out to all Pac Bell/Cingular authorized dealers, stating that they must sell the phones at the price they set for the different models, and prices will vary depending on whether it is MSRP, or if you open a new account.

The 8290 was $99, and most of those asian stores were giving them away for free. I think they make enough from commisions that they were willing to give the phones away, along with accessories and stuff. I heard that Cingular has lowered the commision rates they get, and if they don't charge for the phones, they will be in trouble or something. I don't know the exact details about what would happen if they don't charge, all I know is that most stores will now charge you for phones, and the prices will all be the same for every store.

If you can still find it for free, better jump on it now, because it is going away for sure....

My brother just pick one up in Monterey Park for $85. The guy said that as of Feb 1, they were not allowed to sell the phones for less than $99. But since my girlfriend's family does business with them often, he gave us a cheaper price. Oh yeah, and he threw in all the accessories too. He did say that in a few months, Cingular may change the pricing though. So if you don't need one right away, just wait, or have a friend with who has an 8290 with insurancecough...cough lose it.;)
