So is there any way at all to change the screen logo? PC connection via the IR port? Data cable? I also have the newer 32k SIM card...

And btw, many asian places offer the phone for free or near free... This place in alhambra off garvey and valley offers it for free. Got mine a short while ago.

And... pacbell's new homerate plans are decent now. $30/month gets 150/unlimited nites and weekends, $40 for 300/unlimited, plus free long distance. Plans arent too bad if you are a nite person.

the place off garvey and valley? hahah can we be a little more specific?

anyways, i got my phone for free at ag telecom also. the one on valley off of garfied. they have a couple of stores. one in alhambra and one in walnut are the ones i know of. you just pay for the activation. i think it was like 20 dollars.

i also tried saving the operator logo and it wouldn't work. my friend has the programed hooked up to his infared port on his computer and can get every phone to work except the 8290 for some odd reason. any other ideas?

couldnt remember exactly, but i just found the business card. Its called International Communication; right by Garfield and Valley (not Garvey, my bad...) in Alhambra. Right across from The Hat.

hmm... so no way to change the screen logo? Man... someone needs to write a hack for it. =)

The $30 Nokia rebate offer ended on 12/31/00. If you bought your phone after that date you're outta luck. If you bought it before then, you can probably find it online, but you need a dated receipt.

I don't know if this is correct, but my friend say he got a free nokia 8290 in cerritos, ca w/ all the free acc.

He said his plan w/ Pac Bell was 29.99 for unlimited weekends and weeknights, 150 min. anytime.

Does anyone have this plan, "unlimited weekends and weeknights" seem like a really good deal to me. Or is it just mobile to mobile.

I got it with ATT for 29.99 (250/500 minutes).

I changed my screen logo perfectly by having the logo sent to me. The problem is I cant find other websites that offer free screen logos. I think that you can change yours however.

If you guys ain't getting the 8290s for free by now...you're paying too much. Almost all of them asian stores in MPk, Rowland Heights, Cerritos are giving them out for free with activation. I'm willing to bet that you can walk into ANY asian store and get it for free.

I had the old $29.99 plan with 120 anytime mins, free long distance & MTM calling, and added 1000 weekend minutes for $9.99. I tried to upgrade my plan to the new $29.99 plan so I could get 150 anytime minutes instead, along with unlimited nights and weekends instead of only 1000 weekend, but I found out that the new $29.99 plan doesn't come with free long distance. Those only come with the $39.99+ plan. Add another $9.99, and I'm up to $50/month. But then I got smart and just told them to keep my old plan, but replace the 1000 weekend mins with unlimited nights and weekends. It worked! YaY! Now I'm paying the same amount, but getting unlimited nights and weekends too! I recommend to those with the old plan, to add this feature because that is a LOT of minutes for only $9.99 more.

They will charge you tax on the retail value of the phone I think. At least, that's what happened to me when I got my 6190.

BTW, can we get the new phone and move our existing contract with PacBell over to the new one, ie, start a new 1 yr contract and "prematurely" end the old one wo termination fees?

if you are still under contract w/ pacbell on the old plan, you can switch over to the new plan w/o any contract extension (at least thats what the CSR told me when i did it). Also, about the first incoming minute free option ($5), they will do away w/ it by the end of the month, so for those who might use it as a feature in the future, add it now while you still can. I think the free phones only come with activation of a new plan/contract (not completely sure, might be exceptions), but the way i thought it works, the lil asian dealer gets commission money off new contracts/accounts so thats why the give it away for free...

Btw... so has anyone changed the Screen logo on the 8290 w/ the 32k SIM card? I really want to but dunno how... when i have it sent to me and i select 'save', it doesnt replace the pacbell logo... anyone know how to?

I got PacBell ($29.99 plan) but first 3 months I get it for $19.99. At AG Telecom, they do charge tax. They say the phone costs $299.99 and with accessories, it came out to be about ~310. So I ended up paying $25 for the phone at the one in Walnut.

vinnyracer: I had the unlimited nights and weekends added to the $29.99 plan, so its safe to assume it'll work for any plan above that.

I got my 8290 free a couple weeks ago at some place in Rowland Heights in Diamond Plaza. I payed tax on the retail value of the phone, under $30. The shop just opened recently. They were also offering the 3390 for free. If you buy insurance for your phone, $3 a month from PacBell, you can get a new phone for $30 from PacBell PCS Store.

DTRAN - that's exactly what they do. The insurance is actually carried by a 3rd party, I don't remember what the name of the insurnance company is, but it's not Pacific Bell. They replace your phone and they replace it within 72 hours - or at least that is what they claim to do. Also, if your phone is "stolen," then you need to file a police report to have your phone replaced. If it is "lost," then you don't - something to think about when calling Pacific Bell. They also know what kind of phone you are using also, so you can't lie to them by saying OH, I have a Nokia 8890 and I want another one NOW. Every GSM phone has a specific ID number, something like a serial number, and part of that number tells them where you got that phone, where it went to, and what kind of phone is. Supposedly, they have the ability to completely deactivating not only your SIM card, which is what they should do anyway, but also the GSM handset. I'm not so sure about the second part, because I haven't "lost" my phone, or tried to rather, but that may be something to think about too.

Also remember there is a small dedeductible fee...

i just got the pacbell 8290 phone from a small store in san gabriel tonite...for 24$ of tax, out the door, i got the 8290 phone, only the blue case, for some reason, it does not come w/ the free red case anymore, i also got a free handsfree kit, car charger, and clear plastic cover for my phone w/ clip...note, i believe the new cingular plans do not offer roaming throught ca/nv network like the older pacbell plans, beware, i, myself signed up for the 30$ plan which includes 150 anytime minutes and unlimited nights and wknds., if anyone knows what's up w/ the new plans, cuz cingular changed it somewhat, like you don't get free call forwarding anymore.
