It's been a year since I've had AT&T service (I'm on Verizon right now). I'll probably be switching back to AT&T later this summer and am thinking about getting this phone.

A quick question for anyone on AT&T's GSM: Back when I was on AT&T a year ago with my Ericson R280, I could use the web features of the phone an unlimited amount of time; I just had a basic $30 per month voice plan but since I had the web phone, I could use that and there was no extra charge plus it didn't count against my minutes.

The question is, what is the deal now with the GSM plans? Can I still sign up for a basic voice plan and use the extra features of the phone (such as sending pictures, web, etc.) at no additional cost or do I have to sign up for an additional service (or pay fees, use minutes, etc.) to use the "cool" features of the GSM phones?

PS. If you are in the Minneapolis, MN area, Audio King has had this phone for free after rebate for the last couple weeks.

No. The data side of GSM is still seperate from the voice and does not count against your minutes. However the default rate for data is .03 cents per KB, if you get a data plan then it looks like this;

$2.99 - instead of .03 cents it's .02 cents
$7.99 - you get 1MB of data (all data is counted both upload and download) anything after 1MB is .01 cent
$12.99 - includes 4Mb of data and .008 cents after
$19.99 - includes 8MB of data and .006 cents after

When you sign up for GSM service you can get 1 month of mmode free so pick something at least $7.99 and up otherwise you will still be charged for data usage (ie: if you were to go with the $2.99 plan you wouldn't have to pay $2.99 but any data you use would cost you .02 cents).

In RCR wireless they had a breakdown of the cost of data and at&t wireless actually came up as one of the cheaper carriers. Alot of carriers seem cheaper but it's usually for the first couple of months.

Oh and some of you who don't upgrade often may want to wait till at least summer to upgrade. Come summer time at&t wireless will be launching edge (as apposed to gprs) which should be about double current speeds however there are currently no at&t phones that support this. Nokia will be releasing one soon and sony ericcson may put it in their p800.

Speaking of p800, I think this is the phone everyone should be waiting for! Known features will be
touch screen
symbian OS
flip down and detachable keypad
opera's web browser will work (opera is currently the best "pda" browser out there)
bluetooth
built in camera
tri-band
sony memory stick including support for the new duo sticks (sp?)
And it's just a tad smaller than the 3650 (about half an inch shorter and a tad skinnier)

The price may be high though, $400-$600

Heard back from Alan with "ATT Customer Service".
As long as your friend moves from one AT&T Wireless market to another they would be eligible to transfer their service at any time at no charge.

Hope this helps and thanks for your question.

Alan

In a public thread they had said $25 to change the number, but I'm taking it that the charge is a someone who's not moving. Read the way he phrased the response - "As long as...moves...", from that and the other thread, I'm getting move = free, no move = charge.

Holy crap ATT sucks! I'm seriously considering going over to T-mobile or anybody else.

First off, they got my social security number and my name wrong! They overcharged me $150, and they signed me up for the wrong plan. Worst yet, I had to sit on hold for hours while a clueless rep tried to figure this all out. I think he thought I was "scamming" them.

I love my 3650, but this is ridiculous. Is T-mobile anybetter? I can get a free phone from them, but I gotta sign up for the $39 plan.

I have T-mobile in west LA, and I think its great. Recently I've started to have a problem where my phone drops the call after 20-30 minutes, but I think that has to do with my sim card being routed through Indiana (already was told to go get a new sim card on them, but too lazy). Also the 39 dollar plan is awesome, I use the phone as my primary most of the time and never have to worry about minutes.

I was recently in Taiwan and saw some of the new Ericssion phones (or equivelant to the ones that will show up here) and they are pretty impressive. Why is it that it takes so long for these cool phones to show up here? Oh well. the pictures online don't do them justice, I actually thought they looked ugly until I saw them up close and held them in my hands.
BTW, I'm not too fond of the new Nokia phones but boy are there tons of cool looking one there, hopefully they show up in the US somethime.

AT&T wireless now carries the 6200 which is the first edge phone! While edge isn't officially launched yet I did notice a speed difference compared to gprs.

For those that are interested it goes for $149-$50 mf mir.

Man, it's going to be hard to avoid nightmares tonight.

Thought I'd chime in on the $25 number switch fee and signal quality in the Washington DC area.

Me and a friend were both existing AT&T customers. He had a contract, I didn't. We both bought the phone from buy.com and it was automatically activated. A simple call to AT&T and they switched our old numbers to the new phone and canceled the new numbers. This was all done through their "mLife migration" department. They are pretty eager to get customers switched over to the new system (and burning up the $$ on the data plan).

For signal quality, I've been very happy. My old 8250 never worked at home and went in and out all along my commute (Northern VA, not downtown DC, to be precise). The GSM phone has a full signal just about everywhere I am, although it sometimes has problems inside the elevator at work. And of course out on the road it dwindles to nothing. But from what I hear, AT&T has stopped putting up CDMA towers and is only adding GSM coverage from now on.

Just a followup on a really old thread:

Got my $150 from NokiaPromos.com today - Net cost ~$60 for the signup fees and taxes.

$29 national plan works good. Seattle area coverage is EXCELLENT, New Jersey coverage is EXCELLENT, Manhattan coverage is alright. Probably because of all the buildings. Upper west side has spotty coverage, west village is ok, east village is non-existant, I got coverage in the 72nd area on the 1 and 9 courtesy of Trump (incidentally I get NO coverage at trump place, go figure).

I took over 300 pictures in NYC and it was nice because most people don't think you're a retard tourist. Space Impact / Bounce / and other games were REALLY handy for subway rides (level 7 in bounce) and I must have struck up 10 conversations just about the phone alone. Battery life was excellent. I could squeeze in 50 pictures, 10 or more calls, and an hour of gameplay on one charge. I get 3 days if I just use the phone. My new 64mb MMC card holds like a 1000 640x480 pictures, tons of games and loads of videos.

All in all a great deal. I just wish it played mp3's without skipping and in stereo.

Are the pictures any good? Not just resolution, but I heard that the camera phones tend to have blurry pics, some camera phones have pics that turn out too light or too dark, and generally suck. Lemme know if I was misinformed in any of this. Thanks.

Shinta:

In the daytime or in good light they are passable, in nightime they tend to blur a lot more. They are 640x480, but they will never replace even a good 1mp camera as far as quality. Think of it as a logitech quickcam circa year 2000 as far as quality.

0roo0roo:

I read that 128mb was the tops for most 3650's, while the newest bios might let you use 256mb. However, 99% of the public doesn't have access to the equipment to flash the phones. I've also read that a full 128mb card tends to really slow down the phone as well. Also 3650's do *not* take SD cards.

I forgot to add that the Alarm function works surprisingly well. It *will* wake you up and it even has a 5 minute snooze function. Nice.

My next project is to sync up Outlook with my to-do and contact list.

no idea, i think theres a thread in those forums about the flashmem. not that you need 128mb + for anything really.

only use i can think of would be to put on full movies. from the vids i'veseen downcoded for the phone, they don't take much space at that bitrate.
