Noisy Maxtor 6.4 Gig HDD?

Just received a used Maxtor, Model 86480d6, 6.4 gig HD, installed it and the thing sounds like it has a very large fan running inside, only a little higher pitched.
It works perfectly, I just can't stand the noise. It's louder than the Gorb!
I'm building this system for a less fortunate individual and do not want to sell her a system with problems!!!
Anyone else had this problem?
Is this perhaps a death rattle?
Any insight will be appreciated.

nah, it's a normal thing........my Quantum 6.4GB(i don't remember either Fireball or Bigfoot or something like that) has been doing very loud seek noises for over 4 years(bought it in Nov 1998)
 
Even newer drives have a high pitched whine.

However, those older, smaller capacity drives sound like a tin can with ball bearings banging around when there is disk activity.
