Noisy hard drive & MsMpEng

I have just got a new Win 7 Pro PC with a noisy hard drive. I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed.

Today I noticed my hard drive was unexpectedly continually active. After figuring out how to run Process Explorer I see MsMpEng is busy reading my hard drive. I don't know if it's the only thing that's keeping my hard drive busy.

From googling I find MsMpEng is Windows Defender scan engine. Because I have MSE installed, Windows Defender is automatically disabled and can't be turned on. In MSE, I have "regular scan" disabled.

So there should be no virus scanning running on my PC yet the hard drive is continually grinding over and MsMpEng is doing lots of reads.

I tried killing MsMpEng with ProcessExplorer - Windows complains that I killed it. I refuse to restart it but Windows restarts it anyway (like they know best). So I suspend it using ProcessExplorer - well that locks my computer up and I have to do a hardware reset to get out of it.

WTF is MsMpEng scanning my hard drive for when I have scan disabled in MSE and how can I stop it ??????????

Uninstalling Microsoft Security Essentials got rid of MsMpEng. I then found that Windows search was also keeping my hard drive busy so I turned that off. Now I have some peace!!

Don't Microsoft think people have a right to be in control of what their computer is doing ?????
