Noisy CD-ROM

I have an ASUS A7V with Athlon 1Ghz , ATX Midi case 300 W and 4 yrs old , and an LG 52X CD-ROM , and a Yamaha 16-10-40 CD-RW . When reading a CD disk from the LG , I hear a really loud noise like a plane taking off or something . With the Yamaha also , but much , much less so . Not too keen on taking the PC back to the retailer . Is there anything I can do by myself at home to remedy this ?

If I remember correctly, this is a result of too high rotational speed. This could be "solved" with programs like the DriveSpeed from Nero Burning Suite (allow you to reduce the maximum rated speed of the drive (and so the rotational speed). The drive will copy slower, but in silence

I have LG cd-rom probably same as yours. It was very loud when spinning up and what not. sometimes it would rattle even. I just got rid of it. NEC-3500. ^^

Thanks all . Calin - if I understood right - then the noise doesn't mean anything is wrong or necessarily will cause any harm - just disturbing .

There are two kind of noise there. First, a wind-like sound, which is from air moving and motor rotating the disk. This should not be a cause of concern.
There might be some kind of rattles (vibration in the CDROM, produced by CD disks that are unbalanced. This is bad, and should be avoided if possible.
