Noise Cancelling Headphones

I've been flying a lot for work and both of my co-workers have those noise-cancelling headphones. One Bose and the other Sony. I have to crank my MP3 player all of the way up just to hear it over the plane, so I figured I'd get a pair too.

Anyone know anything about them? I don't even really know how the noise cancellation works. Is it something they can screw up?
 
Those noise-cancelling headphones are too bulky for travel purposes. You want something you can easily slip in and out of you pocket. I recommend you get a pair of in-ear buds like the Sony MDREX71 buds. Because they are in-ear buds they do cancel much of the outside noise. I say this because I previously purchased a pair of Bose headphones and returned them and bought the EX71's, for the reasons mentioned above.
 
I found the SY171's, but they're expensive. $149 everywhere I look (Pepsi: Including Sharper Image. 😉 ) Where can I find the EX71's and are they less money?
 
Um... I found the EX71's. They're not noise cancelling. I have earbuds. Three set's. I even have those Panasonics that hook over the back of the ear and cover the entire ear. NONE of those drown out the sound of the plane. My co-worker's Bose and Sony's do. I've tried them. But you're right about them being bulky. That's why those SY171's look nice... but DAMN! That's expensive! 😀

They cancel noise pretty darn well. I use them on airplanes all the time when I travel and I can't hear ah heck all when I have them on. No crying babies, nothing but the music I'm listening to.

you've clearly never tried their noise cancelling headphones on an airplane. They are by far the BEST for the plane of any I tried. I travel a lot also, they help with jetlag and fatigue. They are not that big in their travel case, they will fit in a briefcase or backpack easily. Well worth the money.

 
If you would consider noise cancelling earbuds, Target has Philips on clearance for $29.99 and they are actually quite comfortable and sound nice.

Just the Sony MDR-EX71 or Etymotic Er-6i or ER-4p. Active noise cancellation fvcks with the sound, and anything Bose just rapes your music.

I have the ER-4p and they offer enough attenuation for a plane, or subway or whatever.
 
I found the Philips HN060 for about $50, which is a great price.... but $29.99 is a better price it they're the same, but on clearance. Target, eh? Guess I'll make a special trip.
 
Bose is crap, check out this link for a good read on them. Noise-cancelling works in theory, but in reality cancels less noise than a good seal, which you can get with closed full size headphones, or canalphones such as Shure's entry-level e2c model, which retails for $60-$70. As an added bonus, their sound quality is excellent - actually I'm picking up a pair soon myself. To the point that you'll easily notice any flaws which the recording/encoding of your music may have. Nice thing about canalphones is their portability; they're about as big as earbuds - though that's where the similarities end.

Text - Just one example of hundreds of what a search for "bose" or "triport" at head-fi will turn up. Btw, "in ear monitors", which the OP in that thread refers to, are also known as canalphones.

Although, the SQ on them isn't as good as the MDR-EX51/71
If you want MDR-EX51/71's with active noise cancelling, get the Sony MDR-NC11A, same exact buds, but with electonic noise cancelling :thumbsup:

personally, i am a fan of the canalphones. look into shure e4c, ultimate ears super.fi 5 pro, or the etymotic er4.

i currently own a pair of shure e2c, but am eyeing the super.fi 5 pro or just going with a pair of custom ultimate ears 5c.

No links on clearance items AFAIK. Just call your local Target. These are the only noise cancelling earbuds they sell.

Well, my MDR-EX51LP were only 25 bucks from Amazon, and for 25 dollars I have never heard anything better sounding in my life.

The Phillips in ear ones are pretty nice\, and only about like $40-60. So nice in fact that some one stole mine 🙁.
