I really have had enough. My sister's new Dell PC is as silent as a mouse. Heres all the stuff i've got in my box:

1 FOP-38 fan -- noisy as hell for my Duron 750Mhz @ 950Mhz
2 case fans (one at bottom of case, one in HD rack).
1 fan on my Geforce.
1 fan in my PSU.
and my 5400 Maxtor HD creates a bit of noice, but i can't hear it since I got the FOP38 installed.

And all this is in an Inwin Q-500 case.

I've read a few posts about Cardboard insulation, but I was wondering if people could give me a few pointers about where best to put it (all over? just on one side, etc..?). Also is there a lesser RPM'ed fan available than the FOP38, as i fear that even with cardboard insulation it'll still be too noisy.

there's some stuff called
dynamat that will dampen sound much better than cardboard and it won't raise your temps too bad. basically, you want to put it on all casing surfaces. Private Message chimpbizkit if you have any questions, because i haven't used it. it's on my plan of attack for my case modding, but i don't have the money yet.

If you want information on how to reduce noise, tweakmeister has a really awesome guide up on reducing vibration/noise from your computer. I know the feeling, as hard as I try to quiet down my system, my roommate's dell is still as silent as a mouse.

I installed some dynamat on my case, basically on the two side panels, and the top panel. I'm going to buy some foam to put on the sides and make it even quieter. There's also some acoustical foam that you could try out -- tonec has that link I believe so you can private message for the link. The dynamat did reduce noise quite well, but no that my ear is getting used to my "quieter" system ... it still seems loud. :D

With regards to installation and all that, it's very easy -- all you do is cut out the size piece that you need, remove the backing, and just apply the dynamat. It's pretty heavy though, so be prepared for a heavier case. Good Luck!
