Saw a commercial for this group this morning. I love the way they spin the story to make it sound like the gov't is doing something bad to the American people. Sorry, soda and sugary drinks are bad for you. I completely support higher taxes on this stuff.

I'm sure people are against it for one reason or another but given the state of the health of the avg. American. A tax of things that are not healthy makes a ton of sense to me.

It makes sense to me also. Although I have wondered if a legislator anywhere has considered an instant tax refund for buying fruits & vegetables?o_O

Uhh no thanks. I'm taxed enough as it is. When did it become trendy to support taxation on goods???

Liberals are authoritarians. They feel that they know better than you do and thus should be making your decisions. They also want your money to spend on stupid stuff. It is always about the money with this crowd. They have never met a tax they did not like...as long as they think it isn't going to affect them too much.

Don't kid yourself, taxes probably aren't going to significantly curtail people's eating habits. Look at how many still smoke despite the ridiculous taxes on cigarettes. Public awareness campaigns have done far, far more to curtail smoking IMO, smoking is so unhip and uncool among today's youth thanks to programs like DARE and Above the Influence, it's really pretty amazing to me how much public opinion has changed on it just in the last couple decades.

Taxes on soda are a great way for the government to bring in some money, though. That's really all this is about.

Also, how does this work for diet soda? You'd think it wouldn't be taxed as well, but I thought when I've read about these taxes before, sodas without sugar would fall under it as well, which is utter BS.

Also, this is probably going to turn into a shitstorm and be moved to P&N within the next hour.

Do you live in the NYC area?

The problem is, where do you draw the line? Cranberry juice, for example, has a ton of sugar in it, naturally. I'm talking real Cranberry juice, not the Ocean Spray stuff.

What about all the pre-packaged foods that have unnecessary amounts of sugar/HCF in them?

If Americans harm themselves by having a less than healthy diet, let them suffer for it. Don't charge me more for my twinkies and soda.

Tip for you: there's a Republican politician who's a big supporter of what's described in the OP.

The only way you won't pay for it is if they (fatties, etc) get charged more for health care/insurance. Otherwise, you're still paying for it (sadly).

With that said, higher taxes on shit like this does NOTHING except bring in more money for the government, period.

Ahh, the liberal left, don't agree with it so tax it without looking past the end of their noses on how if would effect the masses. I guess they never heard of "Beware of the rule of unintended consequences ". Of course that would require a brain that could actually process information.

I get my soda for free so let them tax away, most things in excess are bad for you, my neighbor eats a huuuuuuge steak just about every night for dinner. They should tax steak as I'm sure his steak diet will lead to him being very sick.

We should have 2 healthcare systems running in parallel. One for fatties, paid for by fatties, and one for everyone else.

And he is a dumbfuck too. Politicians in general are scum. It does not matter what side they pretend to be on. The only way they have money to spend on buying votes is by stealing it from those who actually make it. It is also the people who tend to vote for Democrats that are the crowd who think the government should fix their ills so they tend to like tax hikes to pay for their entitlements.

I wholeheartedly agree with that statement. I just think that if we discuss the um, politcal-sidedness of this then the thread will be moved into P&N.

I eat lots of sugary things and I have an acceptable weight. Just because some people can't control themselves doesn't mean the government should tax me. What ever happened to personal responsibility?

Apparently you aren't familiar with the idea of a luxury tax or sin tax which have been around for a loooong time.

I don't mind the idea behind it but honestly it will be unworkable. They'll have to establish guidelines on what is healthy and what isn't. The companies will then find new ways to make junk food that circumvent the rules. All this will result in is more bureaucracy, more tax dollars being spent to fund an agency to enforce this, and more confusion. Honestly, the best bit of legislation they could pass is to move the nutrition data to the front of the package in a big font.

Liberals tend to oppose sales taxes as these taxes are extremely regressive slamming the poor far harder than the rich. It's the puritan bastards that tend to support sin taxes. Now excuse me while I put on my Quaker Oats outfit and cheer for higher tobacco and booze taxes.
