I learn about this lawsuit file against Nicole Prause, a neuroscientist by Alexander Rhodes found of www.nofap.com who claims that Porn and Masturbation are bad via Rebecca Watson.

There nothing wrong with viewing or pleasuring oneself. So what is it with this recent upsurge of new groups claiming that there is? Where is the evidence that either one is actually harmful in anyway?

Wow.. that lawsuit is entirely without merit except as a platform for NoFap to grift some crowdfunding. I hope she countersues.

Video commentator agrees with Prause on the science, that porn is not "addictive" and masturbation is generally nor harmful. However, she seems to think that Prause did make some defamatory statements against this guy Rhodes.

However, the Vice article points out that Rhodes is trying to crowdfund for $250K in expected legal fees. Which means he can't find an attorney to take the case on contingency fee. Which, in turn, means he can't find a lawyer who thinks the case will be successful. If a plaintiff's lawyers insist on being paid by the hour, they do not have great confidence in the case.

Yeah, I tried to dig through it to find the meat of his claim but I couldn't get into it because all i could hear in my head was "What the fuck!" all the way through.
The gist of it seems to be that he's suing for defamation because she complained about his followers harassing her. As her complaints in that regard appear to be factual, his suit has no merit.

I didn't finish watching the entire video as I just had to read the article and post this.

Nothing to really do with the OP, but tts funny that in this "Brave New World" of dystopian excess, we have organizations sprouting up like no-fap, voluntary associations/challenges like no-nut-november, etc popping up all over the place. Iron man challenges, instagram reality, etc.

Its like without natural levels of adversity or challenges to overcome, we just make some shitty new ones while lying to ourselves regarding what its all about.

I looked through the NoFap website and I can see just how pseudoscientific this "Theory" that porn and masturbation are harmful is.

I was having trouble making it through that article and figuring out who was saying what happened. I think there's nothing wrong with and scientifically useful to study whether there are any psychological harms with pornography/addiction. But I think criticizing a group of people who think otherwise and choose to organize it isn't a scientific pursuit. Doesn't mean it involves libel. Seems like they should just leave each other alone.

for those of you who dont know, President Nixon was looking for a new crusade so he could appear heroic and decided to attack pornography.
He ordered a study to look into harmful effects from watching pornography.
The doctors came back and said there was absolutely no correlation or causation with mental illness and watching porn.
He ignored it.

And here we are again 50 years later going over the same bullshit once again. Its worse than the fucking vaccine scare that self-serving piece of shit con artist put everyone thru.

Am I missing something? How does Rebecca Watson fit into this?

Thats what I was trying to figure out - mostly because she is a complete moron. I guess she is just blogging on it?

Elevatorgate was seriously one of the events that prove humans are really going down the shitter with people as dumb as her.

It's similar to stuff like sober october. A lot of that stuff really is good for people overall - and it really helps some people because instead of just a personalized goal "I'm going to start being more healthy" it puts a competitive twist on things. Humans by our nature are competitive and if there is a competition we want to say were the best at it.....

While masturbation (and porn as well) there isn't anything wrong with it - there are legitimately people that have an addiction to fapping. Rare and not worth trying to damn porn/masturbation in general - but it exists nonetheless.

No doubt there are people who obvessively masturbate. The problem is using the term "addiction." Neither masturbation nor porn meet the scientific definition of addiction. The word addiction is way overused. Anything that anyone anywhere might do too much of is an "addiction" in this day and age.

I didn't know there was a scientific definition of the term "addiction". Regardless, my philosophy has been that anything can be addicted if it alters your brain...

Drinking soda - Had a guy I used to work with that had to buy pallets of coke from Sams/Costco because _EVERY_SINGLE_DAY_ he would bring in a cooler with an 8 pack of cokes and go through them all day. I mean every single fucking day. If he ran out or forgot some or anything (he never forgot) he would go out and buy more during the day.
Smoking Ciggs / Nicotine
Drinking too much caffeine
Eating too much food
masturbating too much
Smoking / Using other drugs too much
Drinking too much
Working excessively

Anyhow - in all of the cases - even in highly abused ones like drinking and drugs - the problem isn't necessarily on the pleasure... It's on the person continuing to abuse it. There are tons of people that can drink in moderation, smoke in moderation, masturbate in moderation, and even do drugs in moderation.

Masturbation doesn't cause a physical dependency like nicotine or heroine. In that regard, masturbation is no different than any other activity people enjoy. Anything that people enjoy can be done to excess by certain people. Expanding the definition of addiction to include things which do not cause physical dependency makes the term meaningless. Television is an addiction. Video games are an addiction. Working is an addiction. If everything is addictive, nothing is addictive because the word has no meaning any more.

AS with all these subjects, their either is or is not an objective answer, one that would only be known to somebody who is healthy, if such a mental objective state exists.

Well? Is there or isn't there an answer? You're the only "healthy" one around here, so you should know.

Hehe, I know nothing, but I have heard it expressed that those who are awake know who else is awake and who is asleep, whereas those who are asleep know nothing. Of course I also use knowing nothing in different ways.

But as I expressed elsewhere here today, it seems to be a reasonable question as to how one might awaken if one felt such a state exists.

Desputes in this area make no sense to me. If one knows one knows and if not being told so changes nothing.

What all this has to do with porn, masturbation, libel suits, or white nationalists is beyond me. When you were pondering over knowing the answer, the first thing which came to mind was, what is the question?
