Yes, that's what one of my friends told me last night. I had to just about laugh myself silly. So I said, "Ok, if nobody plays RPG's anymore then what about Everquest?" "They played that in the early 70's." "WTF?? What about Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic?" "Star Wars came out in 1977. Nobody has played that game in years." WTF?? I then asked him about Star Trek. He said "Kirks dead, live with it." Uh, ok. I finally asked him if he was on some kind of drugs and he's like "Yeah, Caffeine and Coffee. My cat has a cup of pot every morning with me too." Uh, ok.

I've got some seriously weird friends. Well, at least one. Most of the others are very normal. The only reason I still hang out with this one is because he's a god when it comes to programming. Man could code C/C++, Perl, Python, Assembly and just about any other language you can think of in his sleep, even if he does sound like a royal crackhead.

It's gotta be something in the water at his house. :D

Eh, RPG is an RPG to me, paper or digital. Heck, I know a lot of people who are still playing D&D, Star Wars RPG, and many more. So it's not dead, but my friend seems to think so, which knowing him doesn't really mean much. :)

What are you guys talking about?

A RPG is the weapon of choice in a shooter, not a specific kind of game.

I'm playing FF1, 3, and 5 right now. Also started Chrono Trigger a few days ago, and I'm thinking of picking up FFX again soon. I'm too fickle.

I'm finishing up the Dedrianna Lives! mod of Jagged Alliance 2 (not quite a RPG but close), and am almost done with Dungeon Siege. After that I might finally start Baldur's Gate 2 if I don't replay Planescape Torment instead. By then KOTOR should be out on PCs, or I might grab Neverwinter Nights and the expansion.

Your friend needs to cut back on the LSD and hash :)

Have you played a d20(?) for D&D called race for retribution?

Sorry, a little plug for a friend of mine - he's the writer of the thing. ;)

Anyhoo, I began playing Fallout 2 again - that's the god of PC RPGs, IMO.

i don't consider most CRPGs RPGs, because theres very little role playing that actually goes on in them. they're more properly classified adventure games.

Planescape: Torment and Fallout 1 both have a fair amount of role playing, they are not just puzzle-solving there are many situations that can be solved differently based on your character's personality. Same to a lesser extent in Fallout 2.

Knights of the old republic is a damn good game. I like the original baldurs gate series as well (both 1 and 2)... neverwinter nights is another one... hmm notice a pattern?

In Fallout 2 not only are there "smart" vs. "normal", "good" vs. "evil", and "loud" vs. "stealthy" solutions to problems, but the developers even put in a "boneheaded stupidity" set of options as an easter egg -- someone in the old IPLY forums had a transcript of the conversations you got playing a character with minimum INT and they are hillarious. I tried it myself and the clan elder's speech to you after the Temple of Trials had me really laughing out loud. I got bored after awhile and didn't keep going, but the speech alone was worth going through the temple.

I've been playing an online, BBS-based, text RPG called MajorMUD for the last 8 years. :p

Yeah, Fallout has some crazy dialog when you have an INT of 1. If you make it 10 you can talk your way out of almost anything. I just got NWN and it says that an INT of less than 9 means you have speech problems.

EverQuest from the 70's, eh? I just logged off EQ about 5 minutes ago.

I used to play Ad&D, RIFTS, and White Wolf but that was 'back in the day' and I don't have a group much less time to play pen and paper RPG - so EQ has to be my fix for the time being.
