I saw a list in the paper the other day, a small portion of the 1000's of people who make > 100k in a year... i'm sure some of them are worth it, but ALLL those people!?! gimme a break!

You mean 250k = 75k elsewhere? What do you make. $500?

A break? Here's a break of reality.

Companies pay for experience.

His salary is 166. The rest is most likely overtime.

I believe the rest is categorized as 'Other' and not overtime.

But really, a librarian making over $212k? I mean that's a lot for a city worker.

Probably not considering the cost of living in San Jose. Then you'd have to consider that librarian is probably highly educated and in charge of all libraries. All stories like this are designed with one purpose in mind - to rabble the public by the use of jealousy.

I can assure you that when I worked for a city government in texas no one (definitely not me) made that kind of money there.
my boss was the city engineer for many years and was making under 100k.

I think the city attorney was the highest paid employee.

Plenty of librarians in upper management or director positions make upwards of $200K/year. You have to understand that the position is one of politics, finance, and program management, not putting "Everybody Poops" in the right place on the shelf.

San Jose does have a history of pay scandals, though. Recently they got nailed for $250K+ retirement payouts for unused sick and vacation leave for police and firefighters. Imagine retiring with a pension and a check for a quarter million dollars just because you didn't fake having the flu. Not a bad gig.

Yes, though it should be said that maybe one in a few thousand librarians makes more than even 100k/year. The average pay for a librarian WITH a Masters is ~$42k/year.

I just want to know why they pay their employees so much when they don't have money to fix roads or even build any infrastructure there.

You a prick like this in real life?

Consider, for a moment, what would happen if they lowered their salaries and the employees resigned/retired/departed. Who would be left to run the government? You?

I doubt they are irreplaceable. And yes, I would.

Clearly you know nothing of librarians. When comparing education librarians are among the most poorly paid group of people in the country. Ex: My starting pay (with my masters) is 36k (a bit below average). If I stay at this same job my pay would be maybe 20% more in ten years. In fact, I do not think there is a single librarian in this entire state that makes over 100k, much less 200k.

Oh, I'm sure that they're replaceable. I just doubt that many intelligent people would work for the government for a lower salary than they can obtain privately.

Considering how many problems this man had to fix caused by stupid people in general, that salary is not enough to compensate for the headaches and "WHY THE FUCK DID YOU DO THAT?!"

What makes you think current employees are intelligent?

The current salaries are not the problem.. many people that make 150k+ are worth it.

Letting people retire at 50 and giving them half pay and full benefits for the rest of their life is the problem.

The "intelligent" people who ran the cities into massive debt you mean, right?

Wait, maybe I'm reading that wrong, but does thomsbrain expect people not to get paid out for their unused sick/vacation time? You get paid out for that in the private industry as well. The only difference I see is that they probably have a much lower ceiling in accrued sick/vacation time.

That's the sad part of this country. The only difference between San Jose and Bumfuck South Dakota (where I live) is that people are willing to pay outrageious amounts to live there. Market value is only what people are willing to pay. This leads me to believe that everyone in California are morons.
