Well, in that second pic, the landscape looks WAY too close for how far away they are...

So how was your last space walk?

I wasn't aware I had to walk in space to see pictures of earth.

Edit: Look at the one second from the bottom. I don't need to say anything else.

And what are we looking at?

All of these pictures are on NASA's websites. Look them up.

I can't believe how many idiots on here think they're fake.

Shading looks strange in some photos.

There are no shadows in outer space--it's the open sun, which is why it looks so...unearthly and incredible.
Sure there are. The astronauts on the Moon had shadows, and that's effectively outer space. There are no shadows in some of those pictures because they're lit by Earthshine, so it's like having about half the sky being just one big uniform light source.

edit: could someone explain that pic though? i thought the shuttle couldn't sustain level flight...why are they fueling it? and at such a low altitude?

Oh common you are not serious.

No. Direct sun on a white suit will be incredibly bright. The camera must use a very small aperature to get a reasonable image - starlight will not even show at all.

I remember Buzz Aldren speaking on the History channel about the moon landing. One of the things he noted was how clear everything looked because there was no interference from clouds or air - just pure light.

IIRC he also mentioned how dark and empty space is. There aren't specks of light everywhere.

I can't believe I posted this over a year ago *bump*.

For clarification, I didn't know if they were fake or real... I just thought they were amazing pictures. I wouldn't disbelieve if they were real... I just thought they were awesome.

Sadly, I think this was my most popular thread...
