No Video!

maybe someone else has a good idea becuase i'm about to reformat in the hopes that it will help me. I can't see any video on my computer anymore, whether they're avi files or DVDs i get sound and everything works fine but the picture is just black, it worked before, and i installed some FFDSHOW and upgraded my Xvid codec and it jus stopped working, i've since uninstalled reinstalled and overinstalled, but i can't seem to see any video. Any ideas?

If you're using FFDShow then UNINSTALL all Divx and XVid codecs. They're redundant. FFDShow replaces them all. Having too many of the same codecs causes problems.

Make sure you use a legit version of FFDShow. Lot's of hacked versions around. Get it from sourceforge.com (Use the 20041012 alpha version): http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow

Dxman is a hand utility that shows you what codecs are installed and lets you selectively uninstall them (some hacked codecs don't have proper uninstallers): http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/audio/dxman.htm

Use GSpot to find out what codec a particular video uses, and to see if a compatible codec is installed: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

Worse comes to worse use System Restore to restore to a save point prior to the problem occuring. because of the way System Restore works, go back AT LEAST a week prior to the problem occuring or you may not fix it.

one monitor, desktop machine.windows XP pro, Sapphire Radeon 9600 video card, 1gig of ram, amd athlon XP 2500, gigabyte 7vaxp ultra mobo... umm i use BSPlayer for video, but windows media player doesn't show any video either and niether does WinDVD when i try to play a DVD. I"ve uninstalled all the codecs i've installed some, i've not installed others, i don't really know if it's a codec problem.
I've tried doing what the flying penguin suggested (aside from the system restore, becuase i disabled that long ago) to no avail. I've also tried updating my vid drivers, reseating my video card and blowing air through the whole damn thing still... anyway tia
 
Can you try VLC player?
If it doesn't work in that, then we'll go further into it.

Also, dl GSPOT and run that - [self explanatory when you run it]
 
well I've no idea why it's working now but i was leaning over the computer after giving up a lot of hope and i hit the surge protector switch by accident now video exists again. thanks for all of your helps though, i may never know the cause of this terrible affliction, i just hope it doesn't happen again.
