No video, stopped working yesterday

I purchased a new rig this past Monday and spent a lot of time making sure everything was seated perfectly. After figuring out how the supply connectors worked, the system was running perfectly.

I was worried about having an lcd tv w/o a dvi connection. I ended up using the dvi-vga adapter and it ran without any trouble.

Before leaving for work yesterday everything was fine. When i returned home to wiggle the mouse the computer would not respond.
I restarted the computer and the bios would not show up.
This is not my first computer build so i knew to start narrowing the components down.

Without any luck and reading all of the topics on this site dealing with this issue, i cannot figure this out.

I have narrowed this down to barebones/ram/video card all seated properly.
Reset the cmos- nothing
switched pci-e slots- nothing
unplug ps and hold power button for few secs- nothing
used both dvi slots- nothing
plug 2 monitors in- nothing
reseat ram and change positions and slots- nothing
reseat cpu heatsink- nothing

I was thinking about rma'ing but i have no idea what components is broken.

Btw I do not have a speaker plugged in, i tried plugging one in but there aren't any sounds because everything boots up as it would if it was working.

Try a different monitor - see if that works, and try the lcd on another system.
Plug a speaker or headphones in, see if you get the windows sound when the hdd stops spinning

I had a very similar issue on my last build, Against my better judgment I did a repair install of XP using the hd from old computer. It worked at first, but after playing around with it that night I shut it down and went to bed. When I got up the next day and tried to turn on the computer it wouldn't boot up. I tried a ton of different things, and finally started tearing it apart to rma the mb. When I reassembled my old machine I found I had the same problem 😕 so not the mb... I can't remember what I did next, but I ended up doing a full format and reinstall, and that fixed my problem.

So long story short, did you do a repair install using an old Windows installation? If you didn't don't ever do that 😛 My time saving trick cost me a weekend of hassle, and I lost a bunch of sleep.

Hey, I am not sure you guys understand my situation. I have tried both my lcd tv and a working dvi monitor with no luck on both ports. I do not have a hd hooked up so it has nothing to do with windows. I simply have mobo, cpu, video card, and ram with no luck getting to even the bios. All i want is it to display something! I dont know what to RMA.... the mobo or vc. I dont have another pci-e machine to try the video card on.

Any other ideas?

I understand that part completely. I was asking if you did a repair installation. When I did, the computer wouldn't POST. No screen, no nothing.

No, it was a clean install of vista ultimate on a brand new oem SATA drive. I did have my video card over clocked from like 620mz to about 800-900 (forgot) but I took the heatsink off the card and the processor looks perfect. There were no signs of artifacts or anything and it ran fine under load for a long period of time.

I am getting ready to send the mobo back for a replacement. I was wondering if i should purchase a cheap pci-e card to test if its the video card. If the processor looks fine then can it still be the card?

How do i know if its the mobo or the video card w/o having another set available?

Not sure if i should send the mobo, videocard or both back...

Thanks,
Ethan

An old pci gfx card would work to for testing also. If you have a small owner computer shop near you, they might have an old pci card they'll sell you. They're nice to have around for troubleshooting purposes. That's really the only way you could rule out the gfx card. Either replace with a pci-e, or a pci card.

I can use a cheap pci card in a pci-e slot? I have a couple as well as agp cards, i know the agp wont work but i had no idea a regular old one would.

No, you can't put it in a pci-e slot, but you should have at least 2 old style pci slots you can use. Try it in one of them and see if you get video output.

Well, i thought i had a pci video card but I dont, only agp.

Should i rma both the mobo and the video card to be safe?

I guess you could, I don't like RMAing items unless they're really broken though. If I had to guess, I would say it's the video card, but you can't be sure without testing it. You don't have a small computer shop near you that could help you out with loaner parts or anything for troubleshooting purposes?

IT WORKS! I stripped the mobo and took it out and placed it on the anti-static packaging it came in to repackage and decided to try it once agian. Now i know to not give up. Something must have prevented the mobo from working, (it had all of the supports in place etc but i dunno.

I am so disappointed, i am not sure if anyone can make sense of this. I got the computer working and played a few games and suddenly the display turned off as if the computer crashed except the computer continued to run and did not output video. I am suspecting the power supply since while the computer is running the cd drive does not have any power.

I am back to where i started.. the video card was overclocked but ran smoothly. As soon as it crashed i checked the temperature of the heatsink and the back of the video card and they were cool to the touch.

Put everything back to stock speeds.

If you are oc and get errors, try the oc forum.

You should have also stated that you were oc'ing if you were right at the beginning.

it could be your psu man. its not powerful enough im guessing.. or it could be your video card.or even the mobo. i would rma all three and get a diff psu. something powerful
