No Vents, No Holes Case.

ok, i've got a major problem. The place i live in now isn't very nice. Every now and then i get spiders entering my case and its really getting to me. either they go in through the vent slots or the small holes that i have scattered all over my case. And i want this to stop. No matter what i do they get in. I even put the case on my desk and they still get in. My question is, is there a case out there that is completely solid? No vent slots/holes at all? and very small holes for the back exhaust fans? I know that is ridiculous. I'll probably sufficate my hardware but i don't know what to do. Again, anyone know of a case that has no vent slots and very small holes for the back exhaust? thx in advance.

Take it easy, they're just trying to access the Web 😀

You really cannot seal up a system like the one in your signature. For starters, the power supply is designed for active ventilation. How about wrapping your whole system with mosquito netting, wrapping-paper style?

LOL! and yes, netting outside or some kind of fine mesh / cloth inside at all the holes might work.

At least your programs should be running well, with the spiders eating up the bugs 🙂

huh? i've never found a spider inside my case. on decent cases the vents are used by fans. spiders don't like spinning fans.

I knew a fellow that when he got the DT's he thought he had spiders in his underwear. You don't happen to have a drinking problem do you? Have you ever noticed pink elephants on the ceiling?

Very funny guys 😀, but seriously, how about some help here.

mechBgon: sounds like a good idea, but how about the cables? It does seem like a no-win situation. I was just thinking about taking everything apart and cleaning everywhere. :frown: 😕

I personally do this to help direct air, but I think it would help keep out bugs as well: tape up all the vents with scotch magic tape. Do it from the inside so that it doesn't look ugly. Be sure to use scotch magic tape because in my experience that's the easiest to remove if you need to. Generic invisible tape can be a pain to remove. Don't forget to get dust screens for your fans (including PSU), too. Finally, and more specific to your situation, I'd remove the front bezel and tape up all holes other than the fan intake, and maybe tape unused drive covers together before snapping them back in (to prevent little cracks for little spiders to crawl through).

If you do this there really shouldn't be a problem with heat unless you have a really weak PSU fan, but judging from your sig (Antec with dual fans?) I don't think it should be an issue. If anything, it might even improve airflow because now all the air is only coming in from one place and only exiting from one place. Just be diligent with the taping because all it takes is one hole for a spider to crawl into. 😉

Aluminum tape like HVAC guys use, that could be useful too. Actually I'm kinda fond of spiders and don't really mind the idea of them getting into the case, although I'd feel bad if they get diced by my cooling fans 😛

Thx Jonathan, sounds like great ideas. Im gonna probably do some serious cleaning with my case first, just one question tho... where can i get these dust screens you were talking about?

By the way, one fan on the bottom and the back of the antec.

Go by Screen Door mesh from like Home Depot/Low's You get like enough for like 2 doors (wayyyy more than you will need) for like $7-8. Cut into small squares and hot glue it over (or on the inside to make it look better) of each fan/vent. You can easily cut holes and what not for fan screws etc. Does not inhibit airflow and the mesh is soo tight it will be hard for much anything to get inside the case.

While you're at it why dont you clean up the room where the computer is and the whole house.

Spiders dont live in a clean house. 😉

ai42: thx alot. that really helped. hopefully this stuff helps out or at least reduce the problem. 😀

Budman: i'll do that. 😉

You should really just have to get a filter of some sort for the intake vent. If there are extra intake vents besides a big one on the front, tape them shut. A thin piece of foam or a fine screen would work. The exhaust vents should all have the fans blowing out, and a spider wouldn't crawl in the back of the case where a fan is blowing out.

You could get this case which comes with a filter and doesn't have any extra holes:

I like that Idea....Im going to have to do that. It should also keep the dust down inside some too.

lol @ general hardware.

If you don't want to do the mesh thing, I suggest you take apart the case and apply duct-tape to all vents and holes you don't need. Make sure to leave at least one intake fan in place, and your power supply exhaust fan. That way you have some airflow still. I think it'd be hard for the spiders to get through the spinning fans, even when they are the only available places to enter.

If you have that many spiders in your place, do they bite you in your sleep? At least you shouldn't have much of a mosquito and fly problem..

The thing about not putting filters on output fans is that spiders can still crawl inside the computer when it is off. So if you only screen fans in the front of the case and not the back, there is still an "opening" large enough for spiders to crawl through (between fan blades when the fan is off), and that would truly be nasty indeed!

SSJGouKi, you're quite welcome, because I totally understand what you're going through. The place I lived in during college was pretty nasty as well. As for what type of screening material to use, I've seen some good suggestions made by other people on here, so I think you're set in that regard. If you look around, you might also be able to find dust filters specifically made for computer fans, but they might cost a bit more than screen door mesh. Good luck!

Spiders serve a useful purpose.. they get rid of nats, flies, and other annoyiong insects/bugs. spiders are your friends.

Tostada: Great looking case... pretty solid to. The only problem with that case is the back of it, that 120mm fan gril has so many holes on them. 🙁 But like everyone says, getting around that shouldn't be a problem. I also was surfing and came upon this case, tell me what you think 🙂 http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=BA14361

Cheetah8799: So far no mosquito problem.... and i hardly have fly problems either. LOL. thats the only good thing about having these guys around 😀

Jonathan Young: i was just about to ask that. That they still can get in when i turn my comp off. 🙂 I'll look into the dust filters, even tho they could be expensive. it would really help getting the spideys out of my case. 🙂

bleeb: yea, spiders are helpful... but it'll really suck if they start a family in your case LOL. thats what im hoping won't happen. 😀

thanks for the great replies everyone. lots of great ideas here. 🙂

The Antec 3700AMB and 3700BQE both have a mesh netting that is designed to keep out dust, i'd imagine it would keep spiders out as well, where do you have your comp. anyway? If it's in a basement that has camel crickets, I know what you mean 😉 (Well actually I don't, that would be my cousin, but I hate spiders all the same 😛)
