No UEFI mobo, no 480/10xx?

My motherboard does not have UEFI BIOS.

I was able to find BIOS support on the Sapphire RX 480 at the Sapphire website and it has only UEFI BIOS listed as opposed to, say, their 390 where it lists Legacy BIOS and UEFI BIOS.

I could not find anything similar via searching for nVidia 10XX products (and I can't search on nVidia products at the Sapphire website).

Like it says on the tin, can I actually use a 480 or 10xx card?
 
As far as I know this is correct. If your mobo is old enough that is has a BIOS instead of UEFI, you are stuck with last generations cards.
 
Not true. I have a test bench that has a G41M-ES2L old core 2 duo LGA775 and the RX480 works fine on it. it DEFINITELY doesnt have UEFI support. Its from 2009
 
If I recall correctly, both my 7950 Wf3 V2 and my G1 970 had UEFI compatible BIOSes on the card level, but still they worked perfectly on my old P5Q Deluxe as well as my Big Bang Trinergy. Both quite old.

Are new cards so peculiar that they wouldn't work on such mobos?
 
The sapphire 480 only lists UEFI as supported BIOS on the product information page. But lists both UEFI and legacy BIOS in other, older, products.

That difference has to mean something, right?

Some of Sapphire's cards have an UEFI/BIOS toggle button. I know my old 390 Nitro did.
 
I would find this hard to believe. Gigabyte didn't switch to UEFI on their boards until Z77 sometime in 2012. They released a beta bios for p67 and z68 boards but it often broke something and most people switched back to Award. It wouldn't make much sense for AMD and Nvidia to lock these people out.
 
I can't believe the 480 would be UEFI only, the Fury series certainly weren't - I've run my Nano on old 790X AM2 boards with no problems.

It's not that the motherboard bios has to be uefi, but some don't play nice with new gpu's that have a uefi vbios, those motherboards require an update to fix the compatibility issue.

g41 is also PCIE 1.1 so we also know it works fine with that
 
Thank you for the information, all. If I only upgrade my video card I will be sure to check out BIOS updates for my board first.
