No treble in my Klipsch Promedia 5.1 Ultras

(Combined my other thread into one post)

First of all, I'd like to know why computers randomly change settings after being unplugged and plugged back in. My friend unplugged her computer for a week, plugged it back in and had no internet.

I unplugged my computer for a week, plug it back in and have no treble. Only bass coming out of my Klipsch 5.1 Ultras.

Well I just downloaded and installed the latest drivers for my audigy 2, and still no treble. I've checked and double checked the hookups. The orange, green, and black wires are running from the Audigy to the sub, and the 5 sets of speaker wire are running from the sub to the speakers. I made sure red to red, black to black. The power is plugged in (obviously, as I am getting bass), and the volume control is plugged into the sub. Volume's up, Rear, Center, and Sub are all set to 0 (even). In the dumb little Creative Volume Control, I've got it set as 5.1 speakers, no digital output, 100% volume up on everything, 50% treble, 50% bass.

In fact, I can put the orange (center/sub), black (rear), and green (front) wires in any order or combination, and it always produces bass. For example, I can hook the green wire from the "front" on the audigy to the "rear" on the sub, and it still just puts out bass somehow. You'd think that would put the front signal out the rear speakers at least. So no matter how I connect it, it's always producing bass and only bass. I'm about ready to bust out the credit card and order some new speakers/sound card if nobody has any ideas. I can't be on a computer without sound. And I have no idea how to fix this because I have no idea what even caused it or what the problem exactly is. =

I just plugged in some headphones to the Klipsch volume control hub and I got treble. So the sound card has to be putting out treble properly. This means the problem is at the speakers or the sub. How could all 5 speakers break at once though? That leads me to believe that something in the sub broke, where the speaker wires plug in at perhaps.

Well I just hooked one of the satellites up to my home stereo. Sound comes out just fine, so the speakers themselves are fine as I suspected. The problem has to be in the sub. Anything suggestions or do I have to get another?

Try switching the balance a bit off on the soundcard, then after a few go back and reset it to your flavour. Do the same with the treble... I used to have an audigy and that would fix it.

I unscrewed the back of the woofer and pulled out the guts to see if I could see anything visibly wrong. It all looks good, except I see one wire connector that isn't connected. I tried to connect it, but when I touched it to the part it connects to it sparked even though it's unplugged heh. I guess this thing retains power for a while. I'm going to let it sit over night and maybe the power will be drained out by morning and i can connect it. I don't see why it would be there if it wasn't supposed to be connected. And as far as that goes, I don't see how it became UNconnected. It goes on pretty tight. =\

SUCCESS!!!! Impatient as I apparently am, I thought to myself, "If it sparked, it probably discharged whatever charge it had." I was right, because I tried to connect it again just now and no spark. I hooked my speakers back up, and as soon as I turned them on I could tell they were working because I could hear them "click" on. That's another way I knew something was wrong, because I couldn't hear them even come on. So it was as if they weren't even getting power, and apparently they weren't.

Now as I said, there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY that I jarred the woofer enough to have disconnected that wire. The only possible explanation is that over time, the vibrations from the bass naturally disconnected the wire on its own. *shrug* Stupid design. =

I'll take some pics of the wire that I had to reconnect if I can get my hands on a digital camera, in case this happens to anybody else.

I feel alive again now that I have sound. =)
