School bands tag, other chase games

ATTLEBORO, Massachusetts (AP) -- Tag, you're out!

Officials at an elementary school south of Boston have banned kids from playing tag, touch football and any other unsupervised chase game during recess for fear they'll get hurt and hold the school liable.

Recess is "a time when accidents can happen," said Willett Elementary School Principal Gaylene Heppe, who approved the ban.

While there is no districtwide ban on contact sports during recess, local rules have been cropping up. Several school administrators around Attleboro, a city of about 45,000 residents, took aim at dodgeball a few years ago, saying it was exclusionary and dangerous. (Watch how second-grader Kelsey interpreted the rule -- 1:30)

Elementary schools in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Spokane, Washington, also recently banned tag during recess. A suburban Charleston, South Carolina, school outlawed all unsupervised contact sports.

"I think that it's unfortunate that kids' lives are micromanaged and there are social skills they'll never develop on their own," said Debbie Laferriere, who has two children at Willett, about 40 miles south of Boston. "Playing tag is just part of being a kid."

Another Willett parent, Celeste D'Elia, said her son feels safer because of the rule. "I've witnessed enough near collisions," she said.

Here's another idea: since your son is such a pussy, how about he simply chooses not to play tag?

We're breeding pansies.

That's the biggest load of crap I've read today, even by ATOT standards. I suppose next we'll have to ban playground equipment because some kid could fall or trip on one of the steps. Then we'll have to ban chairs at the desks because kids can fall out of them. We should even ban food so they don't choke!

Good lord. First Dodgeball and now this crap?

If I have a kid I don't think I'm gonna want to send em to a school. Can't do anything fun anymore.

This is also going to help breed more lardarsed kids. Not being allowed to run on the playground, and being shoveled pizza every day from the cafeteria. GREAT!

yeap i read that this morning. many places are just stopping recess all together.

kids need the interaction and playing.

oh i agree hte one moter is a tard. near collisions scare her? getting hurt is also part of being a kid. if i tried to keep my kids from getting hurt while playing i think it would be worse for them then having a broken arm.

Soon enough parents will start taping layers of bubblewrap around their kids before sending them to school if this keeps up. Are they suppose to just sit on their hands during recess now? What's next.. no Basketball because the ball might hit them in the face? Ugh..

Depends on where you take them... my kid's school still has dodgeball. Of course, it's a little redneck town.

Heh. I broke my collar bone playing tag when I was younger. Grass was wet and my legs slid out from under me. First thing to hit the ground was my shoulder. Doh.

Injuries are part of life. Let kids be kids.

I don't blame the school systems. They need to protect themselves from all the sue-crazy idiots out there.

But it's a sad situation.

What the hell is happening in this country?

Red Rover was the best.. kids got so hurt during that but when you're a kid you bounce back.

It's time the normal parents start protesting and making a stand. Certainly there must be more normal parents out there than idiots right? It's just the lamer parents like in anything else are the big mouths who make to much noise. If the normal people start standing up for things and making noise they could probably turn things around.

damn beat me to the post OP.

total joke of a rule.
If I was a parent at these schools I wouldn't appluad this at all. In fact I'd make DAMNED sure my kids still played tag at lunch.

They going to ban hide and seek too in case one of the kids can't be found?

Yes!

My wife is a full time elementary teacher and though I 100% disagree with this decision I can understand the school's liability fear. My wife deals with some wacked-out parents and I wouldn't put it past a few to sue a school on just about anything.
