I've known for a while that it won't come out before 2010. I'm thinking 2012

nah that's waaaay too long. people will forget about SC2 in 4 years. i'd guess winter2009-summer2010

Yeah, like people have forgotten about Starcraft over the last 5. I think it'll be out maybe next summer, more likely end of 2009- and it'll be the best selling game since WoW, maybe ever.

the thing being is that you can play starcraft. you can go out and buy it.

granted SC2 is so high profile that the chances of *everyone* forgetting are 0, but the fact remains that plenty of people will become disinterested because there's no release.

Of course, if game play is all it's supposed to be then appearances won't matter, but it still seems odd to relauch two of your three biggest IPs with outdated engines. Honestly, both game look fun as hell, but not necessarily next generation..

You're looking at alpha code and graphics, many years before it's finished. You should take a look at old articles with alpha screenshots of Starcraft 1, WoW teasers 2 years early, the Halo preview in 1999... etc. They all looked like trash, and nothing like the finished product. The SC2 and D3 videos are unusually good for alphas!

A lot of visual polishing happens after the game is otherwise complete and stable, as well as being able to test on the newest hardware, and knowing the final System Requirements.

don't kid yourself, things change with time, I seriously doubt they'll make drastic improvements between now and the release

with WC3 they released teasers of units and what not up until the game was released much like how they're doing now with SC2, and for the most part things didn't drastically improve

in fact you bringing up Halo is also something of a counterproductive point because I know of several people who were ultimately disappointed that they ended up nerfing the scope of Halo to be less ambitious as it was intended to be...final products can end up worse than what they tease at...

One of my favorite things about SC was that I could play it on just about any PC. I'm sure they'll make plenty of changes between now and whenever it's released. My guess is Spring 2010.

How? A three year gap between announcement and release isn't bad, especially for Blizzard.

blizzard can take all the time they want with sc2 and d3.

Meanwhile, i'm sure other developers will try to take advantage of this ;-)

Development began in 2003. If they can't get it done in 7 years, they're entering DNF territory. They shouldn't have announced it in 2007 unless they could have it done in a year or 18 months from that point. Just keep quiet unless you're going to have it done in a reasonable amount of time.

I agree, just because things happened a certain way in the past doesn't mean that's the best way to do it. Times change, look at how the hardware industry has moved more towards a hard launch scenario. It's one thing to let us know that its being worked on with a few teasers provided here and there, but to officially announce and pour out meat and potatoes content only to have nothing REAL that we can eat for 3 more years is ridiculous.
