No sound!

It is a friend's PC, he has an Asus P5P800 mobo, and he is using the built in sound card.

Weird thing is, if he connects the earphone to the front panel, it works. But if he connects it from the back, which is directly from the sound card, no sound at all...

Any ideas?

Is this a new build or is this a problem that just happened suddenly?

If this is new, did he install the sound drivers? Check settings in the sound utility program? Is he plugging into the right sound jack in back?

How is the front panel audio connected to the motherboard?

Does the manual include any info on jumper settings?

Integrated sound enabled in BIOS?

Hi, Some mother boards don't let you use both front and rear ports. Some have a jumper you have to move to tell it which you want to use. Some have it in the BIOS setup. Jim

It is pretty much a new build.

We insatlled the sound drivers, otherwise the front panel port wouldn't work as well now would it?

We connected it to the right port, and has tried all 3 (yes even the mic port lol).

The front panel audio connected to the motherboard with 4 pins.

I don't have the manual with me :\ We didn't switch any jumpers tho.

And I'm sure it's enabled other wise we can't hear it even from the front panel port.

If you move the jumpers back to default it might fix the problem

I didn't move them...

So I suppose they are default.

I remember it worked for a while, and then now it doesn't.

I can't really tell because I don't have the board, but it looks like the jumpers need to be off before you can connect the front panel connection.

How about take the front panel connection off and put the jumpers back. If the rear works now, then you know you can't have both working at the same time and we know what the problem is. If it doesn't work, then it's something else.

I know that only one side will work at the same time, but the problem is, whether the front is connected or not, the back side dosen't work at all!

Now I'm trying to get the manual and see if I can do anything from there.

Have you looked to see if the jumpers are there?

I think if they are that the front audio will not work, but since it does, the jumpers are probably removed.
Once removed, then I'm guessing the rear audio would no longer be available.
So you would have to put the jumpers back into place.

I can't find any jumpers on my board that is related to audio device...There is only one to clear RTC RAM...And that's it.

The manual page I linked to has a circle around where the jumpers are...

EDIT: they're in between the back edge of the board and the 2nd PCI slot from the bottom

I put 2 jumpers on the front panel pins, just as u said, thank you sooo much guys!

Nope, because I had to put jumpers on the pins that was originary occupied by the front panel.

Alright then.

If you want to do something that's pretty close to having a front connection, you can run a 1/8" extension cable from the headphone jack in back to the desk area so you don't need to go to the back of the computer to plug something in.
