So I just installed my Diamond HD4870 over the weekend. I am not getting any sound from the HDMI cable. Not sure what the problem is. I was reading through the manual and noticed that only one of the dvi port does HDMI so I switched it to that port and still no sound. The other thing I was thinking, I am using a DVI to HDMI cable. I figured this would be the same as using the DVI to HDMI dongle that came with the card. Is this my problem? Should I use the Dongle and an HDMI cable? What else am I doing wrong?

You probably need to use the dongle that came with the card I'd guess. More than likely it has a custom pinout that your normal cable doesn't have.

Did you install the HDMI Sound driver? The driver didn't come with my HD3850 card, so I downloaded it from the AMD website. I am pretty sure that you need to use the dongle for sound anyway, since a DVI to HDMI cable probably wouldn't output sound since DVI normally does not include sound data (so the cable wouldn't have accounted for that.)

Well this sucks. I bought a new monitor the day before I got my new card. It has HDMI and I wanted to hook it up so I bought the dvi to hdmi cable because my 8800gts did not have a dongle for hdmi. I knew that my new card did and it was on the way from newegg so I was going to return this cable after getting the new card and get an hdmi cable. My wife threw away the box and reciept for the cable so now im out 30 bux.

Are you using XP or Vista? There is no official Catalyst for HD 4800 yet @AMD.com, so you may have to wait till next release. I would first try Windows Update. (If you're using Vista, it usually finds the audio drivers. Not sure about XP) You could try HDMI audio drivers from Catalyst 8.6 but I'd be careful since the card isn't officially supported by that release.

Does your monitor have speakers? If it doesn't then you won't get sound from it even if you hook it up with HDMI. I thought you were connecting to some sort of TV.

The AMD/ATI DVI-to-HDMI dongle is "Special". It allows the audio to get passed through correctly. Any other dongle WILL NOT WORK. That includes conversion cables too. Sorry.

If you are on SP2, you require the hotfix from Microsoft. This will automatically detect your HDMI Audio Device on the card. Install the 8.6 Cats and go for Custom and install the HDMI audio driver.

Very simple and the audio quality is decent.

This link should fix you. Once installed, make sure you select the ATI Audio output in Sounds which is found in the Control Panel, Classic View.
