No sound in windows P8Z68-V LX

It's really driving me crazy, fresh install of windows and the latest Realtek HD audio driver but no sound coming out from the back panel speaker output. I know the motherboard is fine because if I boot to Linux I get sound from that port. Anyone knows what setting/driver I may be missing?

It keeps asking me to plug in the speakers, even though I plugged them in already. Funny thing is it just works under Linux with no fancy crap like device detection...

What version of windows? 10 home 64 or 32bit. Did it ever work in windows? Are you using the Asus driver or a realtek? Sometimes OEM's modd the driver just a bit and it needs to be from them.

It's just plain old windows 7 installation. Tried both asus drivers and then realtek newest drivers, no luck. Seems there is something wrong with detecting the speaker. Why can't they just write a simple driver? No one needs this port detection crap, and the realtek drivers is like 120Mb in size, for onboard sound! Seriously can't we just have something simple like the linux driver that just outputs sound?

I have that exact board, but I use a dedicated sound card.
I don't know if Realtek/Asus offer any service, but at this time it might be useful to try giving them a call. You might come across a helpful CSR.

Does that board have an HDMI out? It might be sending the audio there.

I don't mean to suggest you might not have checked the default audio device.

That could be it, only if he has an audio capable HDMI peripheral hooked up. Absolutly that would do it.

Install W10 just temporary and see if problem is the same.

I tried to change the default audio device, but speakers is simply greyed out as not connected.

Whats being listed as default under the "playback" tab?

If that isn't turning up any clues, how many Audio devices are you seeing listed in Device Manager?
Same info on DXDiAG. (Sound tabs)

It defaults to optical spdif out, however I cannot change it to speakers as it is greyed out and showing not connected even when I plug and unplug the speaker cable multiple times. Everything works in linux so I think BIOS setting is fine, just a windows driver issue. Is there somewhere to get old versions of Realtek drivers?

Well I figured this out, speaker is not detected if plugged into the lime green port, but somehow it's detected if plugged into the black port. However sound is still outputed to the lime green port. So a temp fix is just to plug a dead headphone jack into the the black port all the time and have the speaker cable in the lime green port. Again this must be a stupid windows driver bug because everything just works fine under linux.

Try disabling spdif, then uninstall your realtek/Asus audio drivers and reboot.

Goto windows update, let it check for updates and look for an audio driver. Install it. Reboot.

There's some "general" realtek HD audio drivers on their webpage that might be worth a punt if that desnt help you. http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/

Any more problems let me know we can get the hardware ID and device ID.

Sorry I replied before seeing your comment. Black socket is usually rear speakers (for a surround sound configuration). I'm guessing windows is trying to output to 5.1 or 7.1 when you really want 2.0 (stereo).

Glad you're hearing things now. If you're not happy with leaving the dummy jack in long term check your speakers are configured correctly.

Sounds like you just want "Stereo". A dummy jack in the black socket and speakers in the green socket will look like a Quadraphonic configuration to the OS (i think). I can't understand how that would become the default setting but Ive seen stranger things happen.
Clutching at straws here. If the linked article doesn't solve it, look for a Realtek Audio control panel and check there for anything that can be toggled to Stereo.

If you have the Realtek software installed, you can use any port for any speaker. So just plug it into the Black port (or whichever you want) and you should be able to use the Realtek control panel to tell it what output to use on that.

It is bizarre that the same output works fine in Linux. Are you using the header on the board for audio jacks on the case?

I'm using the back ports, the front audio headers don't work at all under windows. I'm just going to be sticking a dummy jack in the back port for now. Did I mention how bloated the windows driver was? Ridiculous from Realtek.
