No Sound from speakers

I run Win 7 64 bit Home Premium with a Gigabyte GA-P55 USB3 MOBO. As of today,
there is no sound output from the onboard sound device.
Trouble shooting says "device not plugged in", although Device Manager says everything's okay. I've tested the Advent speaker system on another computer and it works fine. I've tested an Altec system on this computer and have the same problem.
I tried a system restore but the software wants me to turn off my antivirus and run it again. That didn't work. Any ideas? Time to buy a sound card and plug it into a PCI slot?

Thanks

Most of the time it will be something dumb, like the sound is muted or you've plugged it into the wrong port :p

I've never seen onboard sound just stop working, but ofc it can happen.

How long was it working before it shut down? Any hardware changes or new programs installed? You could try updating the driver in Device Manager or disable the sound device, restart the computer, and have it reinstalled.

Any chance you have a second sound device (like a sound chip on a video board) installed and chosen as the active device?

Win7 can can usually sense what is plugged in in any port or sound output device. What I would suggest to do first is to go to the bottom right of the screen and right click on the icon for the sound. Then select the bottom selection, I think that is source. Usually it will display a list of output devices. See if what you want is in that list. Sometimes also an output device is disabled and you have to go to the properties of that device. If you have integrated sound you may have to disable the items you are not using. It is easy to get the items confused. i.e. microfone in the back and in the front.

You might try asking this in the Operating System Forum for WIN7

If you had something like skype headphones that might have taken over.
