One of my friends (who is using Verizon DSL as their ISP) recently made the BIG MISTAKE of first letting Verizon DSL internet services sell to her & put their so-called Internet Security Suite of software on her computer and then she compounded the problems that installing that Internet Security Suite of software caused by letting one of Verizon's "technical support" representatives have remote access to her computer to "try" to straighten out some problems that the Security software had created.

So she calls me about not being any long able to print to her printer.

So I go over and I get that fixed pretty quickly by turning back on the spooler service that the Verizon tech. had apparently turned off. Also, found several other services that were turned off also.

But then she also mentions to me that after the Verizon rep. had gotten thru that her sound no longer worked.

So I try to see if I can get that fixed by seeing if I could download the correct drivers for her HP on-board sound card. That does not work. I then try to just disable the sound card in control panel to see if I can just reboot and have the O/S re-detect the sound card. That did not work. I then tried to remove the sound card in control panel and then try to have the system re-detect it and then try to install the latest version of the drivers. But none of this worked either. I can see the sound card entry in device manager and I can go thru the installation of the drivers and that seems to succeed but still it is as if the sound card is being detected but just is NOT functioning.

BUT I then took my Ubuntu live CD and booted to the live Ubuntu session and WAAAAALA, sound works great, DSL internet works great, every thing works great.

So my question is what can I try short of attempting to completely reinstall the Windows O/S to get the sound to work ??? And really, I am thinking that that is probably not going to be an option because the last time I talked to her, she could not find any of the software CDs that came with the system.

Thanks.
