No sound coming from pc

recently, my pc stopped playing sounds altogether. No mute function is activated and I know the speakers work b/c I tried them on another pc. Could I get some speculation as to what the problem might be and possible solutions? Much appreciated.

Make sure the default sound device is correct and verify that both the "wave" and master volume sliders are not muted.

Since you said your pc stopped playing sounds, I'm assuming you have onboard sound. Check the BIOS, it may have been disabled somehow.

Control panel > Sound > Audio > "Sound Playback" check the default device to see if one is selected.
Check your sound drivers and make sure you have the latest ones.

If neither of those work your sound card/onboard sound is probably dead.

sorry, I have an audigy 2 zs card. I'll check the drivers.

Edit: I just reinstalled the sound card and there is still a problem. The driver seems to be up to date as well.

Assuming you verified install in Device Manager, I see three possibilities right now...

1) You plugged the speaker cables into the wrong jacks...considering how they are gold instead of color-coded, this has happened to me a couple of times with my ZS.
2) Cables are not fully seated into the jacks
3) Card is dead

Something to try is to launch a movie in surround mode, then plug your headphones into each output of the card...if you get no sound, it's possibility #3.

ok thanks. I'll fiddle around with it a little and hopefully it works... I think I verified the jacks though... I post my findings later.
