No Sound (Almost) on Vista x64

I just built a new computer, specs here:

Vista Ultimate 64-bit
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
ASUS P5E Motherboard
4GB OCZ Platinum Dual Channel 8500+
ASUS GeForce 8800GT EN8800GT TOP
Logitech Z-680 5.1 Speakers

I am using the sound card that came with the P5E motherboard, I also installed the x64 drivers for it.

Now my problem. I can't hear most sound with my system. I can however hear them from my headphones. I know I configured all the cables properly because when I test the sound card in the control panel, the sound is output by the speakers. I can also hear sounds from xFire, but very little sound in gaming. (The sound comes from 2 speakers, not 5)

MP3s don't play, DVD's don't play, no instant messaging, no sound from Vista itself.. Nothing. The headphones work fine 100% and the sound test works fine too.

Any ideas?

It seemed to me that there was a MASTER SYSTEM volume control that was
activated by that little icon in the start-bar.

Furthermore there seemed to be INDIVIDUAL volume controls for particular applications
like media player and games and so on that didn't necessarily adjust the master system
volume / mixer properties.

Try making sure your MASTER SYSTEM volume levels are at at least mid-levels,
and that the system mixer is including audio from / to all your sources and speakers.

Set it to 5 speaker mode vs headphone / stereo as appropriate if it'll let you.

Then restart the game / whatever and go into the game's controls / sound options
and see if you can raise the level from there.

I've been able to get all sound through the front speakers and the sub woofer. I can't get 5.1 at all though. I've been searching for speaker fill, but I haven't found it. How do I force 5.1 in Vista? I'm using the soundmax drivers my my onboard card.

I use an Audigy 4 ,however go to Control Panel, then Sounds icon, then playback tab, then speakers and last should be a configure button on bottom left, click on that and 5.1 option should be there,if not look through the Sound Max control panel.

Btw is this a brand new motherboard?...there's always the small chance your onboard sound could be faulty(ie only works with 2.1 and not 5.1 set up).

Yes, it's a brand new motherboard. I've looked in the control panel for both Vista and soundmax.

The card is not faulty since any tests produce proper sound, it's just not doing 5.1 for non- 5.1 encoded music/movies/games. How do I force sound throughout all 5 speakers in Vista? I can't find the setting people say to use since I installed the soundmax software. When I choose 5.1 in soundmax it doesn't work either, but in true 5.1 settings it does.
