No signal with GTX 980 on PCIe 2.0 X16 mode

Haven't built a rig from the ground up in awhile but this is driving me nuts.
Trying to get a video signal using a Strix GTX 980 in the PCIe x16 slot on an Asus M5A97 R2.0 Mobo.
Couldn't get it to work in any slots in the beginning but noticed some light scoring by the inputs so I got impatient and got another board, now it will work in the X4 slot but not the X16.
Updated the drivers, cleared CMOS, Mobo is current.

Any suggestions on where to go from here?

Just grabbed an old GTX 750 last night to try out.
We'll see what happens later today.

Just now and it works.
Going to switch the 980 yet again and see what happens.

If the 980 is still giving you trouble I'd consider an RMA. It should work in the slot right out of the box.

Interesting.
After I took out the 750 and popped in the 980, it worked.
I had re-seated the 980 no less than 10 times on 2 different boards with no effect before.

The 750 was hooked up with DVI as was the 980 this last time, switched to HDMI and all is good. (Except now my keyboard doesn't work, go figure)

This is definitely an interesting build.

Thanks,
There's a lot of new stuff that I've never dealt with before since my last build
so I'm sure I will be posting in other threads.
(Pertaining to SSD, UEFI Etc.)

It hasn't started on fire yet so I must be doing something right.
