no search option?

when I right-click on startand go to search, there is nothing there except for the dog. I am having another problem with the volume controls. When I want to put the volume icon in the Taskbar it tells me I need to install it in the add\remove programs. Where is that at in the control panel? Thanks for the help.

What the heck is the dog? Sounds like you may have a spyware infested machine and probably some viruses too.

Reinstall your sound card drivers to see if it fixes it.

It does sound like something seriously strange is going on with your system. I would be looking into spyware (I usually recommend adaware and spybot) and viruses (as amdskip mentioned).

As for getting the volume icon back on a properly functioning system this will do it:

Go to control panel -> sounds and audio devices -> check the ?place volume icon in the taskbar? and hit ok.

I've seen the blank file search window before. I would suspect you also have a blank User Accounts and System Restore window.

This is due to a DLL becoming unregistered (Why? Not sure. Might be spyware related). You need to manually register the DLL.

Click Start button, click "Run". Type regsvr32 jscript.dll in the RUN box and click Ok.

If that does not help fix it, you need to do the same with regsvr32 urlmon.dll

After you fix it, I would recommend you do a thorough spyware cleaning. Please refer to my detailed spyware removal instructions: http://theflyingpenguin.com/spyware-removal.shtml

Hope this helps...
