A while back I set up a XP/Ubuntu dual boot. I tried to do an update to Feisty, but somehow the drivers/x.org got screwed up. I tried "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg", but no luck. It asked me to choose my driver (fglrx) and resolution, but nothing changed. I'm running a AMD 3800+ X2 and ATI 1900GT.

Here's the log X.org log file.

be sure that your all the way upgraded.

Try:

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

Then once that is finished try using the 'vesa' driver just to get it working.

Well, I'm back into a gui with vesa and I've updated everything (I think). Still no luck with fglrx.

Here's the fglrxinfo

OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.4 (1.5 Mesa 6.5.2)

Any ideas? Besides getting a Nvidia card next time. :p

How about not posting the log file in a CODE window so that it's actually readable next time?

Anyway, your fglrx problem is this "(EE) Failed to load module "fglrx" (module requirement mismatch, 0)". If I had to guess I'd say that means that the kernel module and the Xorg module are different versions.

Shouldn't apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade fix that problem?

Depends, I'm not sure how Ubuntu handles the non-free modules since I'm on Debian and I have an nVidia card and a custom kernel on here anyway. But you should never use dist-upgrade unless you're actually upgrading from one release to another and even in that case I think Ubuntu prefers that you use update-manger or whatever they call it.

Check out the feisty ati how-to and read it all before you try any of this because there is alot of good info about setting up ati drivers which can be difficult in linux.

http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.p...sty_Installation_Guide

Your issue seems that you have DRI enabled in your xorg and the fglrx driver does not support Composite with DRI so you need to disable it in xorg first off.

At the end of the xorg.conf add these lines:
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AIGLX" "off"
EndSection

But before you try to follow the how-to remove all of the drivers you have installed. When you boot Ubuntu and get the xorg error and are kicked to the command line type:

sudo apt-get purge --remove xorg-driver-fglrx
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
When you reconfigure select "ati" for the driver and see if you can boot to gnome. Once you are at the desktop go to System > Administration > Software Sources and make sure "Proprietary Drivers for Devices (Restricted)" is checked before you start following the how-to.

Yes --purge remove then reinstall following the wiki. Make sure to disable comp and then configure the driver. Let me know how it goes.

Ok. I finally got a chance to try to sort this out. I followed the instructions to remove the drivers, then followed the instructions to install them again ( http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.p...sty_Installation_Guide ). Everything went smoothly, but still on fglrxinfo it shows

user@user-desktop:~$ fglrxinfo
Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.4 (1.5 Mesa 6.5.2)

So I'm guessing that it's not right, as it should be ATI stuff instead of Mesa stuff.

Here's my xorg.conf

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf(5) manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Weird. Apparently sometime ago I installed Envy :)confused:), so I went through the setup and now I think it's working.

user@user-desktop:~$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Radeon X1900 Series
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6747 (8.40.4)

Does that look right? Is there anything else that I may need to do?

I've got an X1900XTX in my desktop at home and it's working fine. I'll see what mine says and post a follow up later.

I didn't know Alberto Milone developed a version of Envy to install the ATi drivers. It's funny, because Envy is a play on words for "nv", nVidia's proprietary driver.

It would be funnier if that were true, 'nv' is the OSS driver while the closed one is 'nvidia'.

Sorry, I forgot to check my system. I'll post mine when I do remember.

Woops. Haven't used nv by choice in a long time. ;)

Envy rocks. I've used it on 3 systems to get the latest drivers (1 ATI and 2 Nvidia).

Anyone here gotten Compiz Fusion running? It's one of the coolest things I have ever seen!
