ok so my re-purposed box is giving me some issues.

its a supermicro MBD-X8STI-O LGA 1366
Xeon L5520

With atleast 1 stick of ram and no pci cards i get no beeps and no boot, no bios, nothing just fans spin and a black screen

Without ram i get 5 short beeps and one long at the end its AMI bios but i cant find a 5 short 1 long code

ive reset bios and made sure vga is connected and what not. The power supply came out of my old rig so i know it was in good working order. any ideas?

Since the box gives beep codes without DRAM but nothing with DRAM installed, it sounds like maybe it could be a memory compatibility issue to me. What specific DIMM modules are you running? Are they 1.5V DDR3 modules? Also, what happens if you install a single module only in any of the DIMM slots and try to boot the system?

One other thing you could try is to pull the motherboard from the case, place it on a piece of cardboard, then try to boot it with the CPU and one memory module installed. This would at least let you know if there is a ground fault issue with the case.

2 beeps - Parity error - bad memory
3 beeps - Base 64K memory failure - bad memory
4 beeps - Timer not operational - bad motherboard
5 beeps - Processor error - bad processor
6 beeps - 8042 gate A20 failure - bad cpu or mainboard
7 beeps - Processor exception interput error - bad processor
8 beeps - Display memory read/write failure - bad video card or memory
9 beeps - ROM checksum error - bad BIOS
10 beeps - CMOS shutdown register read/write error - bad motherboard
11 beeps - Cache memory bad - bad CPU or motherboard
12 beeps - BIOS rom file incorrect size - The BIOS ROM file found does not match the size of the flash device
13 beeps - BIOS rom image mismatch - The BIOS ROM file layout configuration does not match image present in the flash device
5 short + 1 long beeps - Memory error - No memory detected in the memory slots.
6 short + 1 long beeps - Memory error - EDO memory detected in system
7 short + 1 long beeps - SMBUS error

Still think it sounds like the memory is incompatible.

The model number of those Hynix ECC memory modules you linked aren't on the (admittedly limited) known tested modules list shown on the Supermicro support website. I don't normally mess with ECC memory, but I've worked on a few systems using it and one characteristic they shared is that they all tended to be very picky about the memory modules they would accept. Suspect that this may be the case here as post is actually running and detecting the lack of any modules, but the system locks when the modules are added.

Are you doing something with this system that requires ECC memory modules? It does accept non-ECC modules as well.
