No price cuts for ATI 5830?

The card doesn't suck in so much the price and performance implied by the name does. If it was named the 5790 and carried a $180 MSRP with a $150-160 street price far fewer people would whine.

Had it not been for 40nm process shortages we'd have $220 5850s and $320 5870s by now.

At least the 5770s are slowly drifting down to the $120 or so pricepoint where they belong.

If there are not gonna lower these 5830 prices, the 5850 won't get lowered either.
Think about it.

Average price on Newegg...

5750 145$
5770 165$
5830 270$
5850 315$
5870 415$

If you don't lower the 5830 price the 5850 stays at $300+

Those preliminary benchmarks for Fermi look pretty good though.

It won't be long before everyone's prices start dropping IF TSMC ceases to become the bottleneck with respect to supply issues.

People will/are buy/ing the 260 instead thus I don't get why they won't lower the price.

I think if 5770s drop any further crossfiring them is going to get even more popular than it currently seems to be. Shopping around you can get two for 300$. If they drop further we're looking at ~250$ for some very solid performers.

And if at that point the higher tier cards don't stop dropping, well, I can't say I see sales of the 5830 and 5850 being too good. Pay around 310$ for one 5850 when I can get 2 5770s? I mean granted the extra heat/power and scaling, but I'm thinking at the more reasonable resolutions, no one is going to have any reason to consider a 5830 with the current prices. Perhaps if they drop to about 180-190$, they might start to sell, and that's if the 5770s don't go down.

I'd think they'd do better than a single 5850 would at any rate.
What gets me is why anyone would buy a 260 over a 5770 or a 4890 considering the performance is the same or less than these cards, but the price is a good deal higher.

5830 pricing I understand is ATI probably does NOT want to sell a lot of them. Otherwise it may be forced into a position like NV was with the 9600GSO where they had to use perfectly good g92 chips that could have been 512 MB 9800s and castrated them since the midrange part was more popular. Thus it would be bad business since they are just making less profit than they would be off just 5850s and 5870s.

Do XFire 5770s still do well at 1920x1200 with high AA/AF?

I am curious about that myself. There had been flurries of excitement for two 4830s in CF besting a single at a lower price, only to die out after discovering 4830s just don't have enough memory bandwidth to cope at higher rez where CF really matters.

Hopefully it won't be a repeat of the same deal all over again.

Yawn! Thought this was mainly an oem card and the high retail price was to trick the hp buyer?

What's there to be curious about? Plenty of reviews have already tested 5770 CF up to 2560 x 1600 with 8xAA and 16xAF.

I thought you were pretty unhappy with your 5750... are you sure you want to go dual card?

I was unhappy with the drivers, but it don't crash and pause anymore since the 10.2's. No more flicker when watching video's either.

My 5750 is a good overclocker, will do 900, 1350 all day.(I paid 85$ for it used!)
If I can get a 5770 for 150$ and clock it the same it will beat a 5870 for 235$

You can't beat that! Can you?

Nope, that's great bang for the buck. Before I got my 5870 I thought about getting a second 4870, but decided I wanted the single GPU.

If you get the 5770 you should post how it runs.

Power Color Review by PureOverclock

This is the latest review on the best available 5830 model out there right now. I would gladly have bought it as it was perfect for my needs but only if it was priced $200. The extra $50 is still not worth it. So i bought a 5850 instead.

Read the above review, they just released it yesterday, the Power color edition has a better heatsink, a slightly higher overclock, and the card overall can be overclocked to about 14% (almost similar to a 5850), so it does make sense to get one if you wait for the prices to drop.

I'm a little broke this week.:(

Does this mean we won't be seeing 5850's drop to anywhere near the $240 mark? I guess I'm sitting this gen out.
