So the snow storm has caused more damage than the hurricane. Power is not supposed to back until Thursday. Electric company is reporting 15,000 locations of failure.
Sucks that the gas heat needs electricity to work. Just ordered a 20,000 BTU propane heater from Amazon. Now I have to hope for propane tanks being available.

My mom called and said she has not had power since Saturday night. However, in Boston, it barely snowed.

Still haven't seen snow here in IL yet... It's barely dipped below 32 even ....

That said, I have a feeling the snow is going to be deep this year...

Something like 800,000+ customers in Connecticut still without power and for many of them Thursday would be the best case scenario. People in less densely populated areas of the state might be out until early next week. My sister's town is 100% out and they have no idea when they might be restored. It could be tomorrow and it could be next Tuesday.

I have a small generator set up with a manual switch over box to power 6 essential circuits.
They include:

Furnace / Circulator pump (on same line)
Refrigerator
Lights (interior)
Garage (interior, since if furnace or anything else needs work it is in garage)
Bathroom circuits

So far, have not needed it this year or in the last 4 years or so. But it is nice to know it is there if needed. Our cable service is out. Cablevision has major outages all over north NJ, due to no power to the poles and line amps from JCP&L or PS&G ... they say maybe by Tuesday night. I will be sure to get my credit for outage from Saturday 4PM .. was in Hackensack this morning. They have a lot of outages along River St, including many traffic lights. Bowler city is currently closed due to no power.

I'm in Billerica, MA and have been down in Saturday 10:30pm. We only got like 3-4 inches of snow (which has since melted) but looks like power is not coming back until Thursday. Lost most of the food in my fridge (nobody has power!), thankfully work has power so I can just hang out here and couchsurf until we get it back. Can't get a generator since I'm in a condo...

Several of my friends are in the same boat. One went to Home Depot yesterday and, miraculously, became the 12th person in line for the 12 generators that were being delivered to that store right at that time.

They went straight from the truck on carts to each of the folks, who then went into the store to pay.

Have similar setup here in Colorado. 2 5 gal fuel containers that get topped off after filling generator tank. Then after storm, fuel goes into vehicles until next storm

How long does that 10 gallon + gen fuel tank last you? The issue during 2005 was that folks ran out of gas and there was none at all at any gas station to be had for about a week. They didn't actually ration, but smart gas stations limited you to about 5 gallons a person - and the lineups were about 4 hours long to wait. It was so funny, people were spending more gas waiting in line idling with the car to fill up with less gas than they started with. That lasted until everybody just started walking to the stations.

Planning to have a natural gas generator installed this spring which will run off city gas utilities. No need to store gas, available when needed, can basically run indefinitely with the proper maintenance schedule.

Remind me why we don't bury power lines again?

Around here all new construction requires they be buried but existing construction is a different story. This is especially true in well to do older neighborhoods. Pre-war neighborhoods will fight tooth and nail to keep their old streets and sidewalks in tact. Asking these people to plow up their 100 year old sidewalks and cobblestone streets is like asking them to kill a child. Not only that but many think it adds to the character of the neighborhood. They just won't do it.

I have a small generator lined up for emergencies like this that can power the fridge or washing machine, or router/charge the cell phones, etc.

If we lose power due to a storm in the winter, we put the perishables outside in the snow inside a fence. If its during the spring due to tornado/storm, it likely wont be out longer than 24 hours. We have a stove and plenty of wood to burn as well as a kerosene heater that we can use in the garage when vented properly. My gas grill has burners to use as well as the grilling surface.

Extra maintainence, much higher downtime.

I'm not saying we should retrofit but like Vic Vega said all new construction should require it. I just question the original decision for everything except probably long distance transmission.
