Wow. I find it hard to believe that someone would go that long without having power. Does she not have any family / friends that stops by for visits? I would have been raising holy hell after the shady contractor took my money without completing the repairs.

She must've been an illegal alien or something, right? Too afraid of the INS to contact the city/county? No normal person (with enough money to own a house) would live like that for so long. Why didn't she just sell the house and move into an apartment after the first two years? There's definitely something to the story that the reporter didn't cover.

You don't understand how the mind of an old person works. She was embarrassed. Probably afraid that having it repaired would cost a lot of money - more than she could afford on a fixed income.
