No power - seems easy buy

Hi everyone,

This seems like a fairly easy problem, but since I just built this machine about 3 months ago I wanted to run this past you all and see if maybe I'm missing something.

The machine has been running fine, nothing at all wrong with it. I shut down windows XP, turned the power off, drove down to stores.. came back, walk in, turn on my monitor and then computer and nothing. The monitor works, the printer works, everything but the computer.

It simply gets no power at all it seems. Could the power supply or god forbid something worse just fry like that? I have the monitor, speakers, printer, and computer all on the same power strip. To make sure it wasn't the power cord, I plugged my old machine in (the one I'm using now) and that obviously works.

Where do I start? The hard part for me is that I don't have another machine that can take the new end parts I have in the computer that is not working.

Thanks for any and all help/suggestions.

Sincerely,

Kevin

Sure thing, I'm one of those gaming addicts that plays in invite leagues and goes to tourneys, so I bought myself parts from newegg and built it:

MB nFORCE3-250 EP-8KDA3+ EPOX RTL

CPU AMD 64|3200+ ATHLON 64 512KRTL

DDRAM 256MB|32X64 PC3200B 4TC3 (2)

VGA EVGA|GF (GeForce) 6800 128MB DDR

HD 80GB|SAMSUNG

SOUND BLASTER AUDIGY ES

Need anything else?

Thanks again for any and all help!

Sincerely,

Kevin

I sure do... the brand and model of power supply 🙂 If the system won't power up, despite having worked in the past, the most likely suspects are the PSU or the mobo. Does the two-digit diagnostic LED readout down in the lower-right corner show any readings when you try to power up the rig (or at any other time, for that matter)?

Here's the case I have:

Case Type: Mid-Tower Case
Color: Black
Material: Metal
Drive Bays: 4x5.25" / 2x3.5" / 4x3.5"Hidden
Expansion Slots: 7
Front Ports: 2 USB + Audio
Power Supply: ATX 350 P4 Power Supply(Horizontal) w/ I/O Switch
Cooling System: N/A
Motherboard Compatibility: ATX/ BABY AT
Dimensions: 17"x7.8"x16.7" (DxWxH)
Special Features: Acrylic Added to Front Panel for Polish Appearance, Side Panel Fan for Extra Ventilation

Nothing shows up when I try to power the rig. I did check the master switch on the back to make sure, and neither setting is working. I then opened up the machine thinking that maybe the power switch came unplugged somehow but all the plugs running into the mobo are still connected and look correct.

OK, so a generic power supply then? The label on the power supply tells the brand and model, but I can kinda read the writing from here... animus genericitus. Unless there is an error code on the EPoX's onboard diagnostic LED readout, I would start by ditching the cheap power supply for a reasonably good one like Enermax or Antec, in the ~400W+ range for some future padding 🙂

Thank you mechBgon, I will order one today from NewEgg.

I appreciate yours and jessieqwert's help, it's something I know happens but to just run to the store and come home to a paperweight is not a good way to start a Saturday afternoon.

Thanks again!

Sincerely,

Kevin
