The US is a Republic, not a democracy.

With that in mind, I do not understand what the cartoon was referring to?

I think it is referring to us going around the world telling people what they shouldnt do when we do the same. It has a point but at the same time Kim Jong Il is nothing like an elected president in this country.

A republic is a democracy, just a watered down one. The U.S Federal Constitution came closer to a democracy than the Confederal Union did which actually protected minority rights.

As I've explained countless times, 'democracy' has many forms; one of those forms is 'republic', which is the only one that's actually governed a nation. It IS a democracy.

There's a reason why apparently every US President has referred to our republic as a 'democracy'. It is one. It's "direct democracy" that's the form you mistakenly insist on.

As for understanidng the cartoon, which one? The opera? Citizens United's corrupt ruling allows the corporate money to drown out the people in our democracy is the point.

The US is both. We're a democratic republic.

The cartoon is mocking the "checks and balances - separation of powers" that our government was founded on; we help overthrow governments to put in a democracy when our own democracy's powers have gotten too unified.

When in our government's history was the president of the republic not also the comander in chief?

He always has been, which is the point of the cartoon, that what sounds good as an attack on China turns out to also describe us.

Now, you could say, 'but we grant the power to go to war only to Congress, not the President', but between the President claiming the right to use force any time he wants unilaterally in response to pretty much anything, and Congress passing things like a permanent 'right to use any means necessary' bill against 'terror' and such, that's gutted.

Incorrect.

Republic just means where the ruling body of a given people is not a monarch or has not attained said position by hereditary methods.

USUALLY that means someone was voted into a position of power. That is not always the case.

For example some tribes in Africa have picked their rulers by a trial of rights. Anyone can participate, but only the one to pass the trial takes the crown. Technically THAT IS A REPUBLIC TOO. The ruler is not elected, but earned his or her right to rule through merit and not hereditary.

This is why we state the United States is a Democratic Republic.

If Republic always meant democracy that title would be a little redundant wouldn't it?

Oh, I thought the point of the cartoon was that the 'attack' not only didn't sound good but it makes no sense whatsoever.

I'm not going to bother quoting the dictionary for you, but for this point, no, it's not any more than "automobile" is redundant with "motor vehicle".

An automobile is always a motor vehicle, with trivial exceptions (hot wheels).

A motor vehicle is not always an automobile (motorcycle, snowmobile, airplane).

Sigh, you mean this dictionary?

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/republic

Look at number 3. In the strictest sense the definition of a Republic is NOT a Monarchy. Any other form of government that is not based upon a monarchy is a Republic. Republic can ALSO mean a democracy, as that is not a monarchy as shown by the first definition. Since commonly republics are typically democracies, the word is used much more in that sense so the first definition is list as the most often used definition. But it ALSO means the rest of the dictionary definition unless there is an or clause such as the word being an Antagonyms such as the word cleave. You do know how to properly use a dictionary I hope.

Anyhow, it was semantics I'm arguing here, but in such a volatile forum as the P&N forums I stick with arguments I know and can point to with facts 🙂 This is why you only see me point out only errors in the way people present arguments here. Rarely do I argue based on someone very subjective around here at all.
