OK here's the deal with both games (personal opinion, of course):

Tribes 2 -

Very, very fun. I like it. I think it's a very deep multiplayer game. It has tons and tons of weapons and gadgets and cool vehicles, and it really creates a nice large-scale virtual battlefield. Some servers can handle 255 players duking it out at the same time.

It's not TOO rough on a 56k-er, either. I used to play it on my old modem, and it was decent. Much better on broadband now (just like anything else).

There is one thing you gotta watch out for with Tribes 2: You have to have a really good system. I'm talking AT LEAST a Pentium III with a GeForce 2 card (NOT the crappy mx200, it won't be good enough) or a Radeon, and 256 MB RAM. 128 MB is really choppy. A TNT2 card might work. Voodoo 5 users are out of luck, the game is really harsh on that card.

You can play with bots. They're OK, but they eat up your system resources like you wouldn't believe. On my system, which is pretty good (see below), I can't add more than 10 bots without my framerate slowing down too much. However, if you're on a LAN with 3 people, and you add 6 or 7 bots, you're set.

Conclusion: Tribes 2 is a blast, if your system can handle it.

NOLF:

This game is AWESOME. Except for the multiplayer. The multiplayer sucks. Just pretend it doesn't exist and you'll be much happier.

As for the single player mode, it's great. It was named game of the year by tons of people for a reason. It's a blast to play. The gameplay is exciting and challenging, and the story is great, and the game itself is absolutely hilarious.

Conclusion: It's like Austin Powers, except it's funny.

Buy both of these games, and if they're not in stock, prepay for them.

Yes, I was surprised to see that this included the strategy guide. I picked up a copy. This deal is hard to beat considering there is no rebate involved. :) Thanks for the tip!

Bob

<< I just got the NOLF for $9.99. It is the Game of the Year Edition and even includes strategy guide and a music CD. Great buy. >>

I just went to CompUSA's website, and lo! and behold! they were both there for sale at 9.99.

Now I can keep my layzee arse right in the chair and get them both delivered for $25.98.....which includes $1 for tax and $5 for shipping.

Still an excellent buy at $13 apiece, and I let my fingers do the walking!!!.....:Q:Q:D:D

Thanks for the post!

Yes! You can often pick up the CompUSA deals through an online order. I once picked up the StarCraft Battle Chest for $7.99 plus $5 shipping that way. It's a nice option if making a trip to the retail store is a pain.

If anyone in the Portland OR area is thinking about heading to Jantzen Beach for this one, let me save you the trip. They only had one copy of Tribes 2 left when I got down there about an hour ago. My friggin computer wouldn't load compusa.com to check stock so I decided to take my daughter for a ride over there. When we got back I rebooted and it loaded up fine, then I bought them online. Oh well, at least Sara enjoyed the drive.

POS MS products!

Picked up NOLF. No need for T2.

No TV cards in stock for me :( Couldn't find the free black CD-Rs either. Got the $3 for 20 cheapass CD-Rs for throwaway burning, though.

I was a Compusa that day, but they were out of those games. They had a good deal on the CLIE 610C for $250. Must be clearing for the 615C but paying $150 more for a measly 8 megs isn't worth it.

Tribes 2 $5.00 rebate.

There is a $5.00 dollar rebate from sierra. Good until March (03/XX/02).
You can get it when you download the tribes2 demo and install it.
It pops up as a shortcut on your desktop. (JPG 140k big)

search for t2demo.exe on google or yahoo. Demo is 80MB.

I just uploaded the rebate to geocities.

UPDATED rebate link

Sweet, it'd be kewler if i got this game for 5 bux. Held off on buying it last year b/c i had a voodoo3 3500 and it just plain stunk (tried it at a LAN party). But ow i have an radeon, hopefully it'll be something different from counter-strike and kingpin

vietomars thanks for the info about the rebate.

I picked up Tribes2 last night. Must have been a slow seller-my store's copies had rebate coupons on the box expiring 5/01. Was a PITA to update (had to download updater manually first, auto update wouldn't work at first), esp. at dialup speeds. Looks pretty nice though. Now I wish I picked up a few extra copies.

Vietofmars............wow! man......thanks a lot. You just saved me the cost of shipping from CompUSA!!

You turned this hot deal into an absolute Volcano type deal for me, as I kept my little layzee arse planted in a chair and got the same deal as those who went to the B&M. Saved time, money, energy, gas and wear & tear on my VEhicle.

I love these forums!!!

Props to vietofmars who also saved me $5 after MIR off my online order. I was too lazy to go down to the B&M :)

Thanks buddy!
