why is there such a concentrated effort on atot to keep it pg? to keep the level of discourse higher? to reduce the flaming and immaturity? to make it safe for people to nef at work? or is anand a little prudish? do you think the forums are better for it? or do you feel that we're mostly adults and it's overly restrictive to tell us what we can and cannot say in off topic?

note: i'm not taking a side, i'm just seeing how people feel. hopefully this won't be locked or moved, as i wanted to post it where most people would actually see it and reply

The reason that has always been given to me (right before a vacation :D ) is that this is not an over-21 forum and there are minors and even a few pre-teens present.

That said, there is rampant favoritism in this little microcosim we call ATOT.

But, I've gotten away w/a few things in my time...so I ain't bitchin' too loudly. ;)

Are you crazy? Not keeping the rules would allow stupid people in. At least more than the norm. ;)

could relax a little, i suppose... Nudity and swearing shouldn't be allowed... but people shouldn't get banned for posting something like parody IMO

Yes, they should. It gives a bad example to the newbs that come here that kind of behaviour is tolerated. And it shouldn't be.

But yeah, the mod favortism/enforcing unwritten rules crap needs to stop. If you are going to come down hard on people, then there needs to written rules outlining what is and isn't acceptable. To do anything else is simply not right.

Exactly. There are dozens of "quality" forums out there for posting pictures of your boobs, someone else's boobs, etc.

This, however, is freaking AnandTech. Sure, every board needs an OT section for stuff that doesn't quite fit in any other area, but let's leave AT at that.

we are all adults and curse/swear in real life... so in the thread posts it is not a huge deal. i do think, however, that swearing in the thread titles is tacky looking. as for the nudity... well, this is not a typical private forum. there are many respectable companies that pay to advertise on Anandtech. It should be kept respectable and PG. There are loads of other places to go for cursing and nudity. I think there are so many member here because it is not a slum.

Agreed. This forum doesn't have to be everything to everyone.

When we start allowing anyone to post anything they want before you know it it will be a pay porn forum... not to mention half the population will become horny 13 and 14 year olds constantly just trying to get someone riled up in the forum.

I like it the way it is.

Anandtech forums must reflect the professionalism of the site or the site will no longer be taken seriously, sponsors will no longer give product samples, advertisers will leave in favor of a place that reflects what AT is now.

There's no need to relax the standards. Actually, I liked it better when they didn't allow rampant bypassing of the swear filter. People had to actually use descriptive words to express themselves.

<-- still available if they are looking for an Take the Morons Out Back Mod. ;)
