Had plenty of money set aside to buy a new DSLR next week; I'd have already gotten it but couldn't decide which one.

No camera in my near future though. Instead, 2400 bricks get delivered on Friday. Time for a new patio instead :) 533 1/3 square feet. That's gonna keep me busy for a couple weekends!

sounds like a fun project. composite decking wasn't an option?

Our back door is only 5 or 6 inches above the ground - I didn't want a deck that I had to step up to, and I did a project close to ground level in the past and absolutely hated doing it (turned out nice though). My wife wanted a wood or composite deck; I wanted to do stamped concrete. But, for the price, I just couldn't pass it up. It'll be a relatively easy to do project, and if I ever decide to do something different, I'm sure I'll find another use for the bricks.

My "stimulus check" is earmarked for about 1000 pavers and landscaping block to redo our patio area and pour a concrete slab.

We're only looking at around 350 sq/ft. 533 is one big patio.

sounds like fun. I helped my gf's father build a brick patio around his pool (~8 ft surrounding the pool) couple summers ago. It was backbreaking work, but it was a lot of fun and learned a lot. Their pool looks so much better now

I did my own patio a couple summers ago, I think it turned out well. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I'll answer them if I am able.

Don't know why but I find it amusing that money saved up to buy a DSLR ended up paying for bricks... :)

1. Cancel Brick Order
2. Go to Newspaper Stand wtih quarter
3. Steal all newspapers in there
4. Lay out all newspaper in approx size of patio wanted
5. Buy camera, take pics of your sweet new newspaper patio

Homeowning and kids makes you do funny things with money.

I could lease a 7 series BMW for what I pay in daycare a month. I could have $1500 saved up for a new HDTV but if the lawmower goes up in flames or the fridge craps out then I'm shopping in the less fun section of Sears.

:(

I like this idea. It's fun and practical.

Incidentally, I have to say that there are few ideas more manly than saying "Fuck a camera, I'm getting two tons of brick." I built a "patio" for my mom a few years ago (patio is in quotes because this thing is literally like 35 sq. ft.). It was a pain in the ass, but it looked good when it was done, so there's some sense of satisfaction there.

Later I built myself a computer that runs Crysis at 1080p, high settings, solid framerate. I said, "See, mother, this is what you should have done. Fuck a patio, I've got realistic foliage and God rays!" She was not duly impressed.

Lowe's has them listed for 73 cents each. I paid 25 cents each, hence it was a deal I really couldn't pass up. I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to do it. Because of the grade, I think I'll be able to just put my crushed rock on top of the ground, then the sand and bricks - no excavation. Of course, if I do it that way, I may end up having to pull up the bricks in a couple years, pour in another yard of sand, and replace the bricks. That would still be less work, time, and expense than excavating the area. I'm just hesitant to "not do it exactly the way it's supposed to be done."

Yeah I pulled up the bricks where the firepit was going and recessed the bottom of the pit about 4". I built up the walls of the pit about 4 courses high, but I still need to figure out what I want to do to finish the top of the last course of bricks. Right now it's functional, but it doesn't look as nice I want yet. No pics of the firepit at the moment.

Thanks for the compliments guys

Bricks are delivered :) I'm so excited. I feel like going out and covering my concrete sidewalk with bricks for the hell of it. But, if I do that, my wife will end up liking it and wanting me to leave the bricks there. That would mean a slightly smaller deck. And, that would mean less room for a huge grill for me.

Have fun... I have about 200 7" pavers in the back and need to work on that under deck area (along with about 1.5 cu. yds of granite "fine"). Now that the ground is not frozen and it is not 40 out, I guess I need to get to work.

Spring "break" - yeah, right. Yesterday I picked up 2 of the 3 dump sites on our property. I have a trailer filled with trash that I collected. Most of the stuff was there before we bought the place. We did create one of the piles: when we purchased the place, it came with 2 chest freezers completely filled with "stuff." I'd say "food", but they had been turned off for 2 or 3 years. The smell would make you gag. We hauled them to the back corner of our property and dumped them there for the contents to spill out. Last summer, someone "stole" one of the freezers. The rest of the contents are fairly well broken down and didn't stink any more, so I bagged up all the tupperware, etc., and will take it to the transfer station tomorrow, along with the now empty freezer. (They won't take such items if they're not "clean" - hence needing to let them air out for 2 1/2 years. )

I don't know about most people, but I find buying home improvement stuff and appliances to be just as fun as buying electronics. And I like electronics.

Bricks? Wood? Fasteners? Concrete? Awesome. The best part about this stuff is it doesn't get obsolete quickly, or perhaps at all.
