No Netbeui?

I was networking someone's 2 PC's with an SMC router. I would usually install Netbeui on the 2 clients for file and print sharing for security purposes. The problem is that their new Compaq with WinME does not have Netbeui as one of the protocols. It only had some sort of ATM LAN emulation something or another. Is there anyway of getting Netbeui on this PC?

are you saying that you couldn't find netbeui where the currently running protocols are (control panel, network)?

if you need to, you should be able to hit the ADD button below the list of currently running protocols, then select protocols, then go to Microsoft, and select netbeui.

you shouldn't need to run netbeui though (it adds to network congestion).

what you should do is have only the IP protocol running, as well as the correct adaptor (for your network card), and a Client of some sort (MS networks, Novell or something similar) installed. then you enable a firewall at the point of entry for the internet, and enable file and print sharing should then be enabled, and it *should* work, unless I forgot something.

The SMC Router IS a firewall, so just use TCP/IP for file/printer sharing and don't worry about NetBEUI :)

there you go then... it should work without netbeui.. I recommmend removing that ATM LAN emulation, that's useless to him if you ask me..

Nope your wrong netbeui is in win Me you just add it like any other protocol in networking. See soccerman's post fo more info how to do it

Thanks for the replys.

Nope, there is no option to add Netbeui, not even IPX, just the ATM stuff. I know you can choose Netbeui on the copy of WinMe that I have, but not on this Compaq's oem version. I know they yanked Netbeui from Whistler from the beta I have(Microsoft states they will no longer support it).
I'm aware of the router being a firewall but I just like to have backup security in case any holes are found. I did just setup TCP/IP since it's mainly two 16 year olds downloading from Napster so there really isn't any real data that needs to be protected anyway.
